My favorite Shep shows include one from 1963 where he talks about finding a nest of baby mice in the basement of his family's house and one from 1970 where he talked about crashing company picnics w/his friends, including a strange one held in the nightime. I enjoyed Shep's acting out of the characters in both shows. I was listening to the soundtrack to an episode of Jean Shepherd's America, the one about food across the country, & I was amazed when he mentioned Salem, MA. However, he said that the specality was boiled dinners instead of the chop suey sandwiches or the popcorn from Hobbes' that you get here at the Willows. |

Swamp?? Bog?? Not in my day, at least (Harding alumnus 1954-1963).
As I mention in my extensive Guestbook description, the wooden "portable" Harding's playground was adjacent to a wooded strip of land. But it was way too dry to be considered a swamp or bog. |

Though if the old wooden "portable" building originally stood 1 block further east, as I heard (i.e. on the corner of Parrish and 165th, where the brick Harding has stood since about 1950)(instead of at Cleveland and Delaware, where it was when I attended), that would be possible. The ground to the northeast of the blacktop playground was definitely low and a little damp -- though I would call it a prairie rather than a bog.

Yeah, Bill......That depression is the area Shep referred to as "the bog" in at least 2 of his episodes concerning the older school.
BTW, the folks at the school told me their school is already slated for replacement by yet another Harding, yet to be built,elsewhere!.....

boy, is it difficult to pick a favorite shep show, but here are three: one, "simpleism", from march of '66, an amazingly prescient analysis of where america was going; two, "the age of total showbiz", also from '66; and three, "sewer music" from july of '65, in which shep just goes completely over the top with his singing and kazoo/jew's harp playing. there are zero stories on that show, just one news item and a lot of wild songs! My favorite program is from 1968 where Shep relates where he and an army buddy go out on a day pass from Ft Dix and go to the Jersey shore to enjoy a great meal at the boardwalk. They end up meeting too women eating too much and hurling up everything on a suicidal ride which I remember not so much fm the boardwalk but fm fairs at that time called the Dive Bomber. The reason it is my favorite is sadly it is the only entire episode I remember fm my childhood. Really really funny dan |

That's my favorite also. It's a Limelight show from August 26, 1967.
