A surprise from Max Date: 02-19-2007 By: m10bob	I had purchased the triple DVD (video) pack from Max, and having saved one to watch this past weekend, I was pleasantly surprised to find that as a "bonus", right after the advertised and labelled program on one of the discs, were excerpts from the "Shepherd's Pie" series. These excerpts are almost wholly very close-ups of Shep, and he is talking right TO YOU, just like he did on the radio programs. It's really nice to see the man as he is talking to us. It gives a face to the programs,in animation, as pictures just could not do. I think it would be wrong to say just which of the discs have the "bonus". Maybe I need to go over the discs again. A bell player, the Kazoo Orchestra, The Smith Street outfit, a brass band rendition of the Star Trek theme, etc. The shows are from 1977-78, after the radio show ended - see the timeline for 1978 for details. I don't even remember myself which disc has the bonus footage - more like a trailer that I stuck on the most popular tape to show off some of the other shows available. It's the same reason I put a bonus radio disc in with the DVD orders - trying to turn people on to the radio show if they only know the TV movies. I don't think it ever worked though - the movie crowd is totally distinct from the radio fans. I think the Pie shows are amazing! Shep at his finest, with zero budget, showing what a man with talent can do. I'm hoping that these are converted to DVD soon, but the guy who's doing them seems to prefer the JS America series, so he's doing those first. By the way, I still have seven of the eight master tapes on 2 inch video - the last one went to the Museum of Television to die. If anybody knows where there is a working 2" video machine, outside of the Museum of TV, where they don't want $300 an hour or ask embarrassing questions about who really owns the copyright, please let me know. My source took them out of a dumpster outside the TV station and sent them to me, but only four of them had been put on VHS at the time, so there are three more that I've never seen. The Museum will only give me back a crummy VHS tape for my donation, so screw'em! Perhaps I should heck back, since VHSis virtually obsolete now, maybe they have to provide a digital copy these days.

04-05-2007 ( Reply#: 909 )	scoosdad	Here's a page with some pictures of 2" quadruplex VTR's: http://www.lionlmb.org/quad/tour.html It's probably not something you're going to 'pick up' on ebay unless you have a tractor-trailer to pick it up in, a source of compressed air to run it with, and a degree in advanced vacuum tube electronics to tweak it to keep it running. Sorry Max, I don't know of anyone who has one to let you use for free. Best bet is to approach any of the tape transfer companies who specialized in these obsolete formats.
