Several months ago, I e-mailed the owner of the house on Cleveland, and very respectfully requested either a chance to obtain interior pics of the home, or the opportunity to draw a floor plan of the home, for the many fans out here.
To date, I have not gotten an answer.
(The owner has been on this forum, and is aware of the interest.)
Suppose someone approached you, in person or by mail, with the claim that George Washington had stayed in your home, and for historical reason, they would like to "come in and look around, with maybe a few cameras, or friends"..Of course the consideration of the homeowners privacy must be honored, in spite of the feelings we have for the great storyteller, (and thinker).
As we strive to preserve Shep's works, so too someday might his home be preserved, and not relegated to the typical accidental fire or urban sprawl which has destroyed so many other landmarks in this nation ?
It is impossible to find even one civil war battlefield which has not been chopped up by interstate highways, Holiday Inns, or McDonalds franchises.
So too may disappear the neighborhood Shep grew up in, (as did the Warren G Harding Elementary School).[:(]
I wonder if the majority of Hammond natives are even aware that Shep is likely more known for his radio programs, than for his books, or that he described in detail his neighborhood on many of his programs, or the impact his voice and stories have left on many of us??

To New Yorkers , he may be better known through his radio forum, but to us, he is a native son. As a Michigander, I proudly ask people if they know the movie and then tell them that this is my hometown- Hessville. After all, it was my relatives who lost the bar negotiation for name of Hammond, Let me say, most people in an acknowledging manner are envious that their hometown is NOT that famous and remembered in such a high manner. Linda, as as resident of Salem, MA, the home of Nathanial Hawthorne, a former major U.S. seaport, the former home of Parker Brothers (Monopoly), as well as the site of that little dust-up involving the alleged witches, I beg to differ about being jealous, although I do wish the tourist trap shops were selling leg lamps instead of pentagrams![:D] |
