Shep & Cars, Old Tapes

Friends:
Having been a loyal listener during the late 1960s, and having read his books, I recently re-discovered Shep via the CDs now available. I also just started Excelsior, You Fathead!, so I look forward to learning more about the guy who helped shape my psyche.
Being a car guy, I'm especially interested in his references to such. I recall his articles in Car & Driver (if anyone wants photocopies, I could probably be pestered into providing them in limited quantities). When I met Shep, at the 1968 New Hope Auto Show, in Pennsylvania, he became the first of only three people I've ever asked for an autograph. Yes, he gave it to me, and I probably still have it somewhere in "the vast effluvia."
Recently I realized that I still had a few open-reel tapes of maybe a dozen of his WOR shows circa 1968-70. Last night I dug out my old open-reel tape deck, so now I have to get it working and see how I can convert the tapes into a more useful format, like CD. If and when that happens, maybe somebody on this list can archive them somewhere better than in my attic.

Wow Fred you got to meet Shep and get his autograph!! [8D] First I ever heard of Jean Shepherd was in Playboy magazine. Then the books Wanda hickey, Ollie Hoopnagle etc. I've read a few of his articles in auto magazines but I seem to remember they were mostly about the racing, not much humor. I went to a show in Boston sponsered by WGBH TV with Shep. He put on a great show they literaly had to pull him off stage as time ran out. We couldn't receive his radio broadcast up here, I never even knew he had one.[:(] I recently got some CD's of his radio show and have been enjoying those.

Many hundreds of Shep broadcast tapes are available for low cost or even free. See Schmidco's catalog and also The Jean Shepherd Project for mp3 CDs. Both found on the flicklives.com site. Also, see ebay.com for constant auctions.
I'd love to know what you think of my Excelsior, You Fathead! when you've gotten into it.

Hi Frank, and welcome to the forum!
I think you'll like "Excelsior, You Fathead!" I sure did.
To add to what Gene said, unfortunately the Jean Shepherd Project has been on hiatus for over a year, and they haven't been returning emails. When they posted their last notice, they said they were already three years overdue on their most recently-planned release of Shep CDs. I hope they come back; they've been an incredible asset to Shep fans everywhere.
If you're looking to find more of Shep's material for download, may I suggest the Jean Shepherd Archives. From what I've heard, and this is admittedly second-hand, the eBay DVDs and other for-sale options are mostly/completely repackaged versions of these free downloads.
Finally, if I may toot my own horn, I run a podcast, which is yet another source of the Jean Shepherd Archives. The difference is, the podcast is free, and it comes in convenient, bite-sized pieces for our listener's daily enjoyment. You can read more, and subscribe to the podcast (you don't even need an iPod) at The Brass Figlagee.
Even more finally, I offer my services to transfer your reel-to-reel tapes to CD, and give the shows away for free on the podcast. I have a very nice TEAC reel-to-reel deck, and a home studio to clean up the sound. I'd take very good care of your tapes, and return them along with CD copies for you (your choice of format), postage paid. If the Shep Project were active, I'd recommend them, since they had been the central repository of free Shep shows for many years now. Since it's been four years, perhaps it's time for someone else to step up to do free distribution. I'd also send your contributions along to the Shep Archives, so non-podcast folks could also get them for free.
If you're interested, or have questions, please email me at <shepfan>AT<macDOTcom>
Sincerely,
Steve (ShepFan) |
