Shep's "old man" grew up just south of old Commiskey Park", and this is detailed in a few of the "pool hall" related tales, which Shep told on his program..
I was able to narrow the neighborhood down to maybe a 1x1 mile area, but have been holding off on this info, in hopes I could get the exact addresses.. Shep's dad was not a homeowner, always rented, and as such, records are not easily obtainable.
I did investigations for a living for approx 30 years, so I pretty much know the easier methods of research, but not all.
We know the family moved to Hessville in Hammond soon after the rental propert on Cleveland was built, (in the late 1920's.)
See my thread in the trivia section of this forum for the date.
Shep was roughly 8 as I recall.
Some of Shep's stories mention visiting an aunt and a grandmother, who still lived in South Chicago at the time.
Please note, since the entire area is called "Chicago-land", and most of the neighboring communities lay claim to being "from Chicago",some of the claims of "being from Chicago" may be dismissed.
If you are from there, you know what I mean.
I had many army buddies from Chicago, and remember great debates these guys had with each other over who really had rights to say they were "from Chicago"!!!![:D]

In the episode of 1963-04-XX, titled "The old man as a pool shark", Shep claims his dad is mentioned by name in the Studs Lonigan trilogy, and sez his dad knew all the characters in the book, and grew up with its' author, James T. Farrell..
Shep further states they all grew up "along 55th and Union in South Chicago".
This is 2.6 miles southwest of Commiskey Park..

The 1920 U.S. Census lists Jean Shepherd, 18, living with his mother, Flora, 57, and a brother, Paul, 26, at 5118 S. Calumet Avenue, Chicago. This address is about 2 miles west of 55th and Union. This Jean Shepherd is Jean Shepherd, Sr. The 1910 U.S. Census lists Jean Shepherd, 8, living at 6605 S. Union Avenue, Chicago, with his father, Emmett, 59, a horse trader, his mother, Flora, 47, and his brother Paul, 16.
The census data appear to verify Shep's contention that his father lived in the same neighborhood as the Studs Lonigan characters. James T. Farrell was born in 1904, so he would have been a near contemporary of the old man. |

Just shooting from the hip here....I believe Shep mentioned the Old Man and his cronies going to (or living near) the St Patrick's Elementary School..Where might that have been back then?[:)]

I was listening to a Shep radio broadcast where he spoke of hearing the University of Chicago's band practicing. Was a very funny clip[:)] he also spoke of sitting in the end zone at one of the games. |
