Giant Ice Cream Cone and invented geography
Date: 10-25-2005

( Topic#: 62 )
|
WARNING! This post contains trivia!
Hello, I've just listened to the "Giant Ice Cream Cone" program. I can't comment on whether the giant cone really existed. I can, though, state with assurance that the geography is (at least in part) invented.
Shep specifies the time of the incident as when he was about 9 years old -- therefore, around 1930.
He says his house was on the "outskirts" of town. That's probably not an unreasonable description. Even in the 1950s and 60s Kennedy Avenue (Hessville's main north-south thoroughfare) had a great many empty lots. Though the original (wooden) Harding School had just been built, Hessville's major expansion (east of Harding) didn't get underway till the early 60s. (I still remember one oddity Shep would have enjoyed: "The Talking House," a new structure wired for sound, to sell visitors on the wonders of prefab housing. "How old are you?" you'd say, and a voice would answer from a hidden microphone: "I'm brand new!")
Now, Shep says the ice cream cone was built about a half mile down a road he lived near. The only main streets that he could mean are Kennedy Avenue and 165th Street.
He further specifies:
a shopping center has been built there now;
it was near a river (though nobody ever caught fish there);
there was a baseball diamond.
The "shopping center" eliminates north on Kennedy, south on Kennedy, and west on 165th. Half a mile north on Kennedy, you find Mabel's Diner (the current site of Flick's Tavern), and a few other small businesses--that's all. Half a mile south on Kennedy, you'd be approaching Hessville's main business district, centered (in the 1950s) around the Ace Theater (now the Kennedy) and Fifield's Pharmacy. Again, you wouldn't describe that as a shopping center. Half a mile west on 165th, across the tracks, you'd be where the American Can Co. factory was built in 1957. Beyond that, also on the north side of the street was a large open prairie where my family's dogs chased rabbits. To the north of the prairie was the IHB freight yard, and to the west a huge junkyard (still there) at the intersection of Summer Street and Indianapolis Blvd. Some of that land is still vacant, today. Nothing like a shopping center.
OK, east on 165th, I believe there IS a shopping center (near the ersatz "Morton High School" they built in 1968 to "replace" the REAL Morton H.S. I and the girl I love attended (at 170th--171st Street, 1 block west of Kennedy Ave.)
However, what about the river?? Nowhere near! The closest river is the Grand Calumet, at least 1 1/2 miles north on Kennedy Avenue. No baseball diamond. It was surrounded by the Shell Oil Co. refinery and tank farm, US Lead Refining, and Harbison Walker Refractories. Which explains why the river DID catch on fire, from time to time!
SO ... I think it's fair to say that, great storyteller that he was, Shep added a liberal dose of imagination to any real-life incidents he chose to describe.

Max's "Secret Sources"

Occasionally, Max is able to share programs he has recieved from "secret sources". newly discovered in some collectors attic, or elsewhere. The programs have been unheard by the general population for years, and are always extremely welcome.
Recently, Max made an offhand remark that perhaps one of the 'sources" had become reluctant to share.
This is tragic, as tape deteriorates, and time has shown new generations have already become fans of Shep, and if these old programs are not shared, now, they may be lost forever.
Like the works of any other artist, the works should be shared to be appreciated, but more important, to be preserved.
If you are one of the secret sources, I know Max would be very happy to give credit, for your contributions to the Shep community......

Jean Shepherd Special
Date: 02-25-2006
By: jclavin
( Topic#: 95 )

Note from Max:
Yes, the rumors are true - there will be a Jean Shepherd special this
Sunday on WBAI-NY!
The Shep special is Sunday Feb 26 from 8 pm to midnight. It will
feature the new CD sets "Don't Be a Leaf" and "The X Random Factor"
from Radio Again, as well as shows from his WOR days.
http://www.flicklives.com
And on Monday, radio drama returns to WBAI:
"The Last Harbinger" from The Crazy Dog Audio Theatre, written and
produced by one of the world's leading creators of radio drama, Roger
Gregg - special broadcast of all five half-hour chapters, 7 pm to
midnight Monday Feb 27.
THE LAST HARBINGER is a satiric vision of an obscenely grotesque world.
The story begins as a strange Harbinger is sent on a mission to a
place called Moloch.
Moloch is an absurdly brutal world where the vanity of the elite
compels them to spend more on unnecessary cosmetic surgery than on
medicines for children in poverty. A world wherein a twisted
religious ideology applauds the materially well-off while condemning
the homeless. A world rapidly destroying its environment. A world
with precious little compassion. In short: Moloch is a civilisation
destroying itself.
The Harbinger has the truth.
But can truth alone save a world ?
Be warned:
The Last Harbinger is disturbing.
It is shocking.
The Last Harbinger is a parable for our times.
The Last Harbinger is a riveting audio movie with lush cinematic
sound design and the very best of Irish and international voice
talent. It is crafted to maximize the limitless imaginative potential
of the audio medium.
The series is in 5, half-hour episodes.
The Last Harbinger was commissioned by Radio Telefis Eireann, the
national broadcasting company of Ireland and was first broadcast by
RTE Radio 1 in May 2005.

Max,some of us arrived late into the wonderful world of Shep and Mass Backwards..If you ever wonder what to play next,(since WBAI seems to give you scheduling problems), why not start from some of the original Mass Backward aired programs from years ago, (which were missed by us "new comers"..)
Last week, you indicated you might break from tradition this year and not play the Lud Kissel Dago Bomb program..Well, Shep also did a great program called "The 4th of July in the Army"...
Whatever, we enjoy the show..
BTW, I lost video catolog and cannot e-mail you now..Help??[:)]

Shep's Commercials Show
Date: 08-23-2006
By: diskojoe
( Topic#: 142 )
|
Jeez, it's been two weeks since someone has posted something on this message board. Everybody's probably doing some summer thing like fishing for crappies, indulging in an ice cream price war or gettin' into a summer fistfight. I'm still recovering from last weekend's Red Sox fiasco myself [V].
Anyway, I listened to the latest Shep show on Mass Backwards (8/22) in which Shep talks about people collecting commercials & radio shows & played several Edsel radio commericals. It was such an interesting show in that he was discussing the very means by which his radio shows were perserved for posterity. Also, I recently purchashed a CD of Coke commericals from the 1960's in which various pop stars of the day (Petula Clark, the Box Tops, the Vogues, etc.) would sing "Things Go Better With Coke" in their individual hit song styles. I actually played it in my car in lieu of listening to the radio. The effect was like listening to an oldies show, but it felt fresher in an odd sense.
Also, Shep's discussion of the Edsel in the show reminded me of a discussion I had several months ago with someone I know who owns an Edsel and belongs to an local Edsel club. We were talking about the local Edsel dealership, which was located in Beverly, MA & is now a rent-a-car place. This person was telling me that he knew the owner of the dealership and tried to get him to talk before the club. The guy refused to do so because he had a lot of bad memories. Apparently, in order to get an Edsel francise, you could not sell any other car lines. So basically it was all or nothing & a lot of these dealerships ended up w/nothing.
Before finishing up, I do want to say that I'm currently reading a biography of Vivian Stanshall that came out about 5 yrs. ago called The Ginger Geezer. If you don't know who he is, he was one of the members of the Bonzo Dog Band & one of the last true British eccentrics. He & Shep had some things in common, such as a love of '20s jazz and language and that their talents were spread out in different media. However, Shep was a bit more focused in his talents and Viv unfortunately had problems which were increased by overprescription of Valium. It think Shep would have found him interesting to say the least. Well, hope you all have a nice remainder of the summer & hope to read your thoughts and musings sometime soon.
Think clean thoughts, diskojoe

Shep did a very funny program about his first day of school. He started by talking about walking through Woolworths on 42nd street and seeing the school supplies, then described class with NO DESKS, a sandbox and horror or all horrors, taking a NAP! This would be a good program around about now, Max. Please. |

The Deli Show

I listened to the show that Max broadcast several weeks ago that had Shep discussing the joys of NY Delis (which I believe was originally broadcast circa 1972 by my best guess) & I noticed two things: 1. In one of his tales regarding NY Delis, he mentioned Herb Gardner and A Thousand Clowns, which was surprising to me, knowing how his friendship w/Mr. Gardner ended over A Thousand Clowns; and 2. Shep made the comment to the effect that people thought that he came back to Hammond, IN every week & talk to Flick, which, he said was "the last thing he wanted to do." Thanks again to Max for broadcasting the show & Jim for putting it on the Net (& I hope he feels better [:)])

Limelight Convention Show 7/11/1964

I listened to Max's latest show, which was a Limelight show from 7/11/1964, where Shep talks about how he & his fellow employees sabotaged a major speech by their boss, who was running for President, a story which he told many times. I believe that the person that he was referring to was Ohio Sen. Robert Taft, who did run for President in 1952, losing to Ike in the Republican primaries. |

Thank you Dick Alliger(sp?) for providing the recently aired early program from 1956.
Hearing a WOR program from when Shep was only 35 years old was very revealing, allowing Shep to touch briefly on several of his later aired and loved topics,(Hammond, the Army, his feelings and observations about life), and the obligatory theme song!
Also thanks to Max for airing this very fine program, and Mr Clavin for providing format to access it on a national level.

Reruns for a newer audience

I applaud Max's decision to re-air past Mass Backwards' airings of Sheps programs as many of us were not around, either for the original airings, nor the early days of Mass Backwards.
In '73 I was in Manhattan on leave from the army and my (then) girlfriend lived near the "Recovery Room", near Cornell Med Center, and this is most likely from where I first heard Shep on the radio.
Even then he was considered somewhat of a cultish personality amongst the students on the eastside, (and I refer to interns and nurses)..
Of course, not being a local, I had no idea how big Shep was, and I doubt he ever did know.

Just a query to Max and/or anybody who happened to listen to the latest Shep episode on Mass Backwards: Do you think that the newscaster that Shep mentioned in the show as having an authoritative voice on air & then reading comic books & watching Lucy off air was Paul Harvey? I'm just wondering. |

Just to drop a line to thank Max for broadcasting Shep the past decade or so on Mass Backwards & also to Jim for hosting the rebroadcast over the Internet tubes. I always listened on Tuesday nights after spending a whole day festering @ two jobs & it was a joy to listen to Shep after enduring another day of absurdity. It's too bad about Mass Backwards, but it was great while it lasted. Thanks, Max |
