This great Jean Shepherd PBS movie has not been shown in the NYC metro area in years. Recently I've e-mailed my three local PBS stations requesting broadcasts of 'Phantom' and all the Shep PBS films. I've yet to receive a reply (of course) but if enough people request the films, we may have a shot at seeing them on TV, at least in the NYC area.
PBS station programming may be contacted at -
WNET, channel 13, NYC - programming@thirteen.org
WLIW, channel 21, Long Island - programming@wliw.org
WNJN, channel 50, New Jersey - audience@njn.org
WNJN reply 08/02/05: Thank you for contacting NJN with your inquiry pertaining to Jean Shepherds movies. Unfortunately I do not see the programs in our current schedule but I will forward your request to Programming for consideration.

I contacted PBS Video over a year ago regarding these films on DVD. They replied that "Unfortunately we do not have any plans to acquire and distribute these movies at this time. I apologize for the frustration."

I received this reply on 01/17/2006 from WGBH in response to my inquiry regarding Shep's movies being released on DVD: Unfortunately, JEAN SHEPHERD'S films are not in distribution at this time; the rights clearance costs are prohibitive. Indeed, we have been looking to clear these rights for two years but the costs are out of reach for the time being. We regret to say that we do not have information as to when or if rights will be cleared.
Sincerely,
WGBH Member Development and Services
feedback@wgbh.org So it looks like someone or some organization is demanding an exorbitant amount of money from WGBH for the video rights. |

I don't care what youse guys say, I like Wanda Hickey! I think those glasses made her look smart!
She was played by Roberta Wallach, daughter of the actor Eli Wallach. For those guys who, like me, still retain the same hormone levels as teenage Ralph, Schwartz, and Flick, Miss Wallach reveals more of her [ahem] charms than in "Phantom of the Open Hearth" in this beautiful and classy 1987 photo:

If only Ralph could have seen her like that!
