I don't know who did the great color illustrations for Shep's stories in Playboy, but I wish they could be released for framing. They were always able to convey the stories Jean was trying to portray by words..[:)]

Shepherd and Playboy--it kind of makes sense. Shepherd and Hefner were both self-made working-class guys from the Midwest trying terribly hard to convince the world that they were not the shy, inept dreamy types who spent most of their adolescent on the outside looking in--truth be told, Hefner, even at his peak of cultural signifigance (and he actually had some, many years ago) still had his nose pressed against the glass--the outsider with the in-crowd even when the party was at his house . . . |

Banjo Butt Meets Julia Child

I have been looking for a copy of a short story by Jean Shepherd that appeared in Playboy in December, 1968 "Banjo Butt Meets Julia Child". It was -- without a doubt -- the funniest story that I have ever read. I had a copy of that issue of Playboy for many years, but loaned it to someone and never got it back. Does anyone know where I could get a copy of that story. I don't need an original or the entire magazine, but would like the story itself. Can anyone give me a lead?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Pearl's Bamboo Hut. - Lost Playboy story?

As a mere child in the 60's I remember reading a story in Playboy by Mr. Shepherd about an experience during basic training that involved a clip joint called Pearl's Bamboo Hut. The characters Gasser and Zinsmeister were in the story. That's all I can remember. I wonder now if this is a false memory because the story hasn't been antholgized nor is it included in any listing of Mr. Shepherd's Playboy stories. As a long time fan and follower I've never seen any reference to this story at all and I have searched. Does anyone have any information about this story? All I really have to have is the date of that particular Playboy. I'd love to read the story again. Any information at all would be appreciated.

Car and Driver...

I first discovered Car and Driver back about 1972 or so...saw an article on the Citroen SM, and decided I needed that car. Never got one...but...
Discovered that Shep had a regular column in the magazine. This was enough to get me to subscribe. Enjoyed the magazine for the next several years. Of course, all the copies I had are now long since at the bottom of some landfill, so...is there an online archive of Shep's Car and Driver columns?
Where am I going, and why am I in this handbasket? |
