I just finished re-reading Wanda Hickey a few days ago. Reading the story "The Return of the Smiling Wimpy Doll" reminded me of a story I read in Bill Maudlin's book the Brass Ring about the origins of the Wimpy character. As I recall, the creator of Popeye (Segar?)was in art school in Chicago, I believe, & he had a professor named Wellington who was very proper gave him a hard time about being a cartoonist, so he created a character named J. Wellington Wimpy who was the exact opposite of this professor. |

I'm proud to say- I have an autographed copy of this book. The sad story is- I never met Shep! I was away at school, and my dear old Mom happened to pass a bookstore in New Jersey where he'd just concluded a signing and had left about 50 copies behind signed, "Excelsior! Jean Sheperd." Knowing I was a fan, she grabbed me one for Christmas that year. What a treasure! [:)] |
