We are doing fine here in Greenville Ky. Just a litle soggy from all the rain.
I believe we will be asking for rain about August.

Glad to know you didn't get the winds and tornadoes. I thought Nashville area was done this morning, but we got a lot more---I have no damage, but know some who do. And, yes, we will be begging for rain come August and September. BTW, this is supposed to be a year of the cicada in this area. That is another treat to look forward to.
Cj, being such a newbie to the area, may be ready to head back north unless he has a good memory for the winters.

We went back up for Easter, SC. Came back Monday night to experience literally the worse storm I have seen since surviving a typhoon in Viet Nam.
Ready to move back up north??? NO WAY!!! Try to imagine this kind of activity in 20 degrees and snow.
We received a real butt kicking in the Murray area. Murray itself was shut down Tuesday morning as it seems the entire planet was without power. We got ours back on Tues eve. Winds in excess of 100mph have uprooted trees and damaged homes all around me. You can imagine what has happened to mobile homes. Somehow I have escaped the damage that others have received.

The county has even supplied inmates from the jail to remove fallen trees that were blocking the roads.

I don't live in town, but rather within walking distance from KY Lake, where I have my pontoon boat slipped. I saw this message this morning:
"Tennessee Valley Authority and the Corps of Engineers are predicting the lake level for Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake to rise to 371 feet (12 feet over summer pool)." A RECORD BREAKING LEVEL."
I will be keeping an eye on that...Cj |

Seejay, you have now had full-immersion baptism into the tornado alley spring awakening.
As for travel up to da region in the spring, after college I learned after several attempts, that the storms, flooding between here and there and the slow-to-end winter up there made summer and fall visits a better choice.
And soon, you may be deafened by the 13 year cicada rising. I have such buzzing in my ears now, that I may not know any difference when the cicadas come.
Did you ever do the sandbagging of the Little Calumet? I remember boys leaving school early to help with that (so they said). It sounds like you may need to sandbag around your place? Can you dry dock (is that the appropriate term for getting the pontoon out of the water and high ground?)
At least you won't be bored.
Thanks for those pictures. Tom J showed us some pictures once of the ice storm that devastated his town one winter. So, it is true, there is no hiding place.

Why do I feel as though I've only stuck my toe into the water?

The fam wanted me to go up for Christmas, but I declined that idea in a hurry. I felt that my survival odds were better in spring. It was an iffy 60 degrees then. Not too bad.

Oh Man!!! I had to go thru that last year! Do I hafta do it again??? It was so bad that I had a slipping belt on my truck and did not know it for a while because it sounded like the cicada. It wasn't until I pulled it into the garage that I realized it was coming from under the hood.

I had to do that several years before the Highland flood back in the 80's. Do you remember when KMart on the blvd flooded? I watched that happen while bagging Highland side. We had some torrential rains then and I was bagging the river on Indpls blvd down by 'Frog Hollow'. Got alot of sandbag practice in Viet Nam.
It sounds like you may need to sandbag around your place?
No. I am up on a hill. If it floods here, every one else will have floated away already.
Can you dry dock (is that the appropriate term for getting the pontoon out of the water and high ground?)
I don't think it will come to that. Those dock floats are made to rise up pretty high, although I'm going to monitor it pretty closely. If they rise up out of the pipes, then the entire dock assembly will float away--boats and all. Now that would be a Kodak moment!
At least you won't be bored.
Not at all. I have enough projects around here even without natural disasters. I've been cutting some of these fallen trees around here to stockpile wood for next (ugh) winter.

Tom showed me some of those. If you could put the human suffering aside for a minute, they were some of the most beautiful pix I've seen...Cj

Tom J lives about 12 miles north of me and as for as I know he has survived the storms with no damage.
As a side note I talked to Tom a few days ago and he is healing well after his latest surgery to put "things back together". His wife, Georgeann is being treated for her infection through an IV port with antibiotics every eight hours. Since Tom is unable to work he is taking care of her.

Roger, thanks for the update on Tom and Georgeann. They sure have had a rough time of it this year.
Seejay, I am remembering earlier floods and older Mortonites "skipping" school to sandbag the neighborhoods around the Little Calumet. I left the region in 1961 and have not had first-hand experience of a flood up there since the late 1950's. I do know they continue and from reports, are worse than back then.
So, you have become a lumberjack, a pontooner, and a storm dodger. See how much you have gained from retirement. I do hope you find the commonwealth a more hospitable home as the year continues. (My dad was born in southeastern KY and I lived over there from ages 7 to 12, so I have a soft spot in my heart for Kentucky.)

I have friends that live on Barkley Lake and they are on an island and it looks like it will be some time before they can get out. Well, they can get out possibly. The road to their house is flooded out so they have to take their golf cart to the flooded area then cross the water in their john boat and walk to where their car is parked on high ground. But then the road that enters/exits the subdivision is also flooded out so if it's not too wet there is a back dirt road that they can possibly use. Fortunately they have only the flooding and no damage. This when they have their house up for sale and no one can get there.

I have my boat slipped in a place called "Water's Edge Marina" on Kentucky Lake side. I was joking a bit with SC about the possibility of docks floating away when the water rises. That's exactly what happened!!
We have two floating piers housing the slips; the old one and the new one. They rise and fall with the level of the water. I guess the old one has posts driven not as high as the new one. One morning as the water continued to rise, the pier rose up over the posts and floated a quarter mile or so, headed for the main lake---boats and all!! Nobody ever figured the water would rise to within a foot and a half of the top of the dam when they constructed it. A couple of guys went out in their boats and pulled it back to the marina and it is secured to the new pier until modifications can be made to the posts. There was no damage to anything, but I missed out on a real Kodak moment there...Cj |

CJ, you described what could not happen that did. Sorry you mised the photo op. They are now saying that
the large winter snowfall added to the rains (rather the other way around) has given us the flooded rivers. So, "all thing work together for" whatever the outcome, I guess.
And, BK--we had a conversation on here back in the winter about maybe a gathering of regionites in the LBL area--there are now 3 Sheptalkites (eons?) who live in that area and I live just South. You pass (or could do so, I guess) near the area on your snowbird flights. Ken, in WVA, has said he would try to get to such a gathering, given the right timing.
Obviously, now is not the time....but, just putting the idea back out there. |

Land Between the Lakes, but Bob, I may be calling it that and have it all wrong. I believe there is a resort called Land Between the Lakes up in the area CJ lives now.
It could be that the Land Between the Lakes is in TN---but it is all made from
the manipulation of the TN River up there around Mayfield, Golden Pond, Murray, KY....

It's beginning to look like Atlantis rising back above sea level. I can see the walkways heading to the piers although they are still under a little water. A lot of the launch ramps are opening back up and the ungodly mosquitos are right back on schedule.
I haven't been to LBL since last fall, but here is a pic my daughter-in-law took in the LBL while they were down here for a few days. It is a 'hard to get' pic during rutting season...Cj

And it looks like more rain for you today, Tom. At least with the cooler temps the storm/tornado threat is more limited. I get to travel south to a nephew's home to stay with dogs for the day and night. Lucky for me, the rains predicted have fizzled.
CJ: an awesome pic. I had to slow almost to a stop last month to let a young buck with only one prong to his rack go across the road about 1 mile from my home.
He, kinda looked both ways and slowed at the pavement, then trotted across.
BTW: not to start any political discussion, but have any of you looked at the Land Between the Rivers (note: RIVERS) sites that tell the story of the people who lived there when the LBL project by TVA took their homes? Interesting if unsettling reading. Eminent Domain, an issue that is rearing its ugly head within urban areas today.

ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
Last night our marina got hit by a tornado. We have two docks there and one of them got hit. Lost 5 boats and two houseboats have to be retrieved up the river. In this tangled mess is 4 boats and you can see the pontoon boat upside down.
My boat was slipped in the other dock. I realize Joplin took a much bigger hit than this, but it is getting scary now.

Crazy things have been going on longer than since the first of this year. It seems to me that for at least the last five years we are seeing things that I never saw before in my lifetime.
We had a major windstorm with straight line winds up to 100 MPH a couple years ago. Right here where I live the winds did not get up to that speed but they did in southern IL not too far from here.
We had that MAJOR, MAJOR ice storm in January of 2009.
We are having WINTER tornadoes. You never used to hear of tornadoes in the winter around here, but now some of the worst ones we have come along in winter.
There seems to have been a climate change for sure. Maybe it's just part of Mother Nature's cycle, but it sure seems weird.

OK, we got some torrential storms, hellified winds and even a tornado. My only contribution to all the mayhem was one tree that got blown over.
But at the end of the day, when the rain has stopped, I remember one of the reasons why I moved down here...
