Welcome to Sheptalk, Six!
Thank you for serving our country in Viet Nam. You Viet Nam vets served just as honorably and as bravely as did any American soldiers in any war, but you were not given proper respect or shown proper gratitude when you came home.
I hope you fully recovered from each of your wounds.
Enjoy the site, and do lots of posting!

Thanks 4 the welcome Tom and I will surely be chiming in once in a while in between ALL the wonderful postings and photos that I still need to sift through ...
I am so glad I found this forum and have been enjoying what I have seen thus far.
Going to practice posting a foto here for future reference on procedure.
This was taken with my little brother when I came home on leave from Vietnam. Front yard of where I grew up on 7500 block of New Hampshire St in Hessville.

Welcome, Six. And enjoy the posts. Some have been here quite awhile. It is surprising how people just find this place from time to time.
Roger, did you know the Van Alstines? Ann was my aunt--Kyle John and David were my cousins.

Hey, Six----
Thanks for joining, and a BIG thank you for your service to the U.S. of A.
Hope to hear a lot from you; our school backgrounds sound pretty similar. I attended OLPH ('57-65), BNI ('65-67) and Morton ('67-69). You might have known my late brother Mike Rapchak, who was one year younger than you. I think you will enjoy the combination of nostalgia, historical fact and craziness that is documented here on Sheptalk. (Check out the threads "Tribute to the '50's - Mel Blanc's Christmas Tree" and "50 years ago Today", which are both very OLPH-oriented).
By the way, my user name, which sounds quite exotic, is taken from a Three Stooges short; the Arabic-type heavy says "I am Hassan Ben Soba!" to which Shemp replies "I had a few too many myself". So my mid-eastern qualities are about as authentic as those of Wizzo the Wizard.

SC- I knew David very well. We went to high school together. I spent some time in his home. It was very upsetting to me when his father died. I couldn't imagine losing my father.
I remember being at his house many times, as the trains went by they would literaly shake the house.

Roger, my mother and Ann were sisters. I think I may have been to their home once. I remember having seen Curly one time. Kyle John was several years older--I believe he became a policeman in Highland or Griffith. The sisters were 12 years apart in age and their mother died giving birth to my mother or shortly thereafter. Their father was Russian and their mother Hungarian; both came to the US running from the atrocities that were happening (as did many eastern europeans.)
I am not positive about this, but my younger brother told me he has died.

Hey SC & Jim, You are both right. Mr VanAlstein died while David was in high school. David was a year older than me, he died about three years ago. I was in contact with him just before then.
David, Frank Yates, Jack Cambell and I were neigbors and spent alot of time together. They are all gone now, but I have great memories.

Roger, did David marry, have children? I know it sounds strange than we were 1st cousins, raised in the same town, went to the same high school and knew so little about each other. There were family circumstances and the two sisters really had a rough time in their early years, I think. But, I know next to nothing about that side of my family.
But, six degrees of separation idea? Both you and Jim knew my 1st cousin.

Jim, so you did know a first cousin of mine at Morton? As you have read, here, I did not know David well--see now, that I posted a question you had already answered: Did he marry? Did you mean to say you fixed him up with his first wife? SC

WOW I thought David was older than me, but I was three weeks older than him. He graduated in June of '62. I graduated mid term in '63.
I was in contact with him via email for a short time before his death. I knew he had been divorced but did not know about any family. |

OK Here's what I remember. I was going out with a girl one block east of Kennedy Ave directly in line with the Dairy Queen. Her best friend lived next door to her to the North. I fixed the two of them and I guess Cynthia and David got married. Some time in the mid 90's I spoke with David on the phone. He sounded pretty upset about her leaving him without any advance notice except a note when he came home from work. I knew David well in high school. Vernon Arnold, David and myself were in the scouts together. Does anyone know wht Cynthia left him and how he met his secound wife. |

Vernon Arnold...now there's someone I remember; another very intelligent one. His mother was a "kick"...I think she entered about every sweepstakes and contest offered. Don't know if she ever hit the mother lode, but I hope so. She was a sweet lady. Do you know where Vernon went with his life?quote: Originally posted by Jim Plummer

What I know is little. Vernon joined the peace core and spent time in Africa. Upon his return, I don't know what became of him but his experience apparently had a profound effect on his life. I think I found him on classmates but have never gotten a response. I also found his brother, Tom on facebook-his photo makes him look like his father, Vernon, sr. But again have never gotten a response. What I remember is that their mother, Stella, was a one of a kind. She was always arranging parties so the kids could socialize. The funny thing is that we kids weren't at that stage yet. I remember that Mr. was kind of quiet and let his wife do all of the talking. At some point he would say,"Now Stella". and that was that. The Arnolds used to watch Perry Mason on Saturday night. One of Mr. Arnold's favorite jokes was," I wonder what they call Hamilton Burger for short?" Ham - Burger! Along with MR. R. ,Mrs. Arnold was probably the most unique adult I ever met.quote: Originally posted by MrRazz

Yes ... I lived on the corner you mentioned and The Van Alstine's lived at the dead end right next to the tracks. We used to play tag football in the Van Alstine's field next to the house. His mother was always nice to us and so was his dad altho I do remember he worked hard and had passed. His dad's nickname was Curly. I somewhat remember Kyle but mostly David who was older than I.

Your name does indeed sound very familiar to me ... I think you should know my sister Patty as I believe she mentioned your name back then and she is a year younger than I ... She graduated OP Morton in '67 ....

I didn't start at Morton 'til fall of '67, so I probably missed your sister. But I might recognize her (your) last name--- is it mentioned in any of your posts? Couldn't find it.
