Boy, that name sure sounds familiar, but I cannot get a picture of the place in my mind.

Does that mean Parkmoor was diagonally across from the Ridge Road Drive-in, which was on the northeast corner of Ridge and Cline? Two drive-ins at the same intersection? |

Yes, but Ridge Road Drive-in was for movies and Parkmore Drive-in was for eating. |

Does anybody remember the assistant manager of the Ridge Road Drive-In-Richie Biers? He was the guy we heard during intermission telling us all about the snak bar and who won what free prize for being there?quote: Originally posted by BobK

I remember Richie, he was a hard worker. During the day he was out lining up business' to advertise on the theater screen. At night he was at the theater, meeting and greeting his customers. He was always very upbeat and friendly to all.

I always thought the Ridge Road Drive-in Theatre was a cut above the others around. Always seemed clean, and well kept, and it was one of the few that wasn't located in a swamp!
If you remember, the Hammond Outdoor was behind K-Mart, and that used to be a swamp, and then later a dump (filled in with trash and land fill). The bugs there could eat you alive.
And as for the US 41 Outdoor, there was just something surrealistic about watching an outdoor movie while smelling the refineries of Whiting and seeing the tall stacks with flames coming out of them. Plus the wetlands surrounding Lake George were another breeding ground for the pesky mosquitos. |

I remember a cousin of mine running off the road while watching a road runner cartoon as he drove by the 41 outdoor.

I got to know him fairly well and he did all the work around the theater. I don't think I ever saw the manager, if they had one. I'd bet they didn't now that I think of it! Over a three year period I got all of the posters after the films played that was three a week times two. Years later they pretty much paid for my divorce from the first wife. Thanks Ritchie, where ever you are.quote: Originally posted by Roger D

Here's a small ad for the Ridge Road Drive-in from the Hammond Times, Wednesday, May 6th, 1959.

My family went there occasionally in the early 60's. I remember the little amusement park-type rides that were located close up by the screen that kids would play on while waiting for the big moment when things were dark enough for the show to start. There were popular tunes of the day--probably a radio station--piped in over the sound system to keep everybody in an upbeat mood. When the movie was on, I always remember the car headlights driving by outside on Ridge Road that you could see flashing through the cracks in the fence.
My dad took my brother Mike and me there a couple of times in the fall/winter on Wednesday nights; every few months my mother's bunco- club gals would come over for a night of festivity, and the men-folk were expected to get their butts out of the house for the night. I remember seeing that silly 3-D feature "The MASK" there in November of 1961 on just such a night; bad film, but better than the scene at home, I think. |

I convinced my father to take me to see Little Abner one winter night at the Ridge Road. I liked the comic strip and I can imagine what my father liked in the film. I got the speaker in my passenger window. After the film was over and before I could stop him-you guessed it! He tried to drive away in our 57 red chevy without removing the speaker first. You know what happened to the window-it was laying in the snow on the ground in a million pieces!! As I recall he wasn't mad at me which was a big relief. |

I remember Richie very well as we went there all the time ...
He had coal black hair (crew cut type) and a big nose from what I remember. Like you said ...hard worker.
And the Parkmoor ... Had the best fish ... we used to buy buckets of their golden battered fried fish they had there on Fridays. I believe the Parkmoor was owned by the Yanuzzi family (of Highland) at one time ...
Thanks 4 the memories.

You got it Six and don't forget the heavy New York accent! He really wished me well as I left to go to California and become a projectionist. When I went back a few years later the drive-in was gone and replaced by a twin walk-in which is now long gone as well. |

The picture isn't very good. I scanned it from my 1968 Highland High School yearbook. I remember the Parkmor and I also remember a great place near there (across from the Ridge Road Drive-In) called Max-Ed's Drive-In. Best onion rings I've ever eaten.

I remember Parkmor - one of my favorites. Parkmor had great pizza burgers - much better than any schools. I also remember Max & Ed's. Sign was a big fish. Max was Maxine, Ed's wife according to my Dad. We used to get their fish every Friday.

The last time I went thru there (which was probably a year ago), they were still open, but I think there was a Times writeup about them that indicated their future was looking bleak. How do you compete with these 'super-structure' theaters which have three dozen screens and an arcade of 50 machines?...Cj |

The Town Theater was on the west side of Kennedy Ave. in Highland about three blocks north of the Ridge Road/RR overpass. |

My favorite time at the Towne theater was the time I saw Kings of The Sun. It was middle of the week and I walked in after the main feature had started. I watched the co-feature and the first half of the main feature again. As I was leaving, I heard a voice saying,"Kill it, the kid is leaving!" I had been the only one in the place! |

Many nights spent at The Drive In, as it was called back in the day. It was the site where thousands lost their virginity, too. Hey, those were the days! |

I remember Max & Ed's having the same sign as the Fat Boy Drive-In on Indianapolis Blvd. in the Woodmar part of Hammond: a big fat boy biting a hamburger. You're probably confusing the fish with Park-Mor Drive-In across the street, which served fish every Friday - the place was always packed on Friday evenings. I think Max & Ed's had been a Fat Boy before it changed owners, and they left the old sign up. Anyway, it was a hamburger drive-in.

Here's the Purdue Archive's photo of the classic FAT BOY Restaurant at 6730 Indy Blvd in Woodmar. You can see the outline of the porky kid on the sign, chomping on his burger.

I only remember going there once...with my family on a hot summer Sunday for lunch. I seem to remember we were all dressed up, too, like folks did back then.

The Purdue Archives also has this picture of a Fat Boy Restaurant. I have no idea where it could have been. Does anyone recognize the place? It looks like early 1950s.

Well, I think it was about 1964 that I worked at Fat Boy. I didn't like the guy who owned the place, tho I don't remember his name, and, it was my 1st job and I was a spoiled little girl who didn't even make her own bed let alone do any real work, lol. |
