That is so sad! He was in need of a kidney transplant last I heard. I wonder if he ever got one?
I guess we all know that he was the one who did the U.S. 30 Dragstrip promo... "SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY (reverb) at smokin' US 30 Dragstrip."
He had a website. http://www.jancgabriel.com/
There is at least one clip of Jan doing the US 30 Dragstrip promo on Youtube. I can't go to Youtube at work, because it is filtered. Just go to Youtube and do search on it.

Yes, I listen to WJOB online while at work and they mentioned this a lot. I heard his trademark "Sunday! Sunday!" was and is used a lot in advertising. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, right?

well, in the 1960's he did a rock and roll program from 7 to 9pm, if I remember right. I also think that Comay's was his sponsor plugging their 45s and listening booths. I bought Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride and drove my mom crazy playing that record. He had a dedication line and then after a while I got interested in FM rock.

Sad to hear the news about Jan "Baby."
About 1966 I started to work at WJOB as a student. Got involved through an eagle scout program with others from area high schools. We had a short Saturday moring radio show for a while.
Eventually I became the Morton High School reporter for WJOB and had to call in a report every week day (1-2 minutes long,) and Jan played these high school reports during his segment, I think 6-10 was his slot, if memory serves. Most was info on school events, "dedications," etc.
He was a great guy, and always treated "us kids" well. We got promos that the station did not want. He even introduced us to some of the "then upcoming" music performers who stopped by to see Jan and to promote a new single. Hanging out at the station was an adventure.
About a year or two ago, while rummaging through some old things, I ran across a "station" photo of him.

The photo is circa 1968. The mikes used back then were about as big as your head.
