I don't know what it's like in Liberty Twp because I left before the first snow. It's been cool to cold down here in FL so far this Winter but no snow. I would imagine my place up there looks much like yours. I had to cover my plants and small palms to protect them from frost over the next 4 days.
Thanks for making me feel better. ;^)

Snows over two or three inches are a rarity around here.
We will occasionally have snows over 6", but we might go four or five winters in between snows that deep. About every ten years we might get a 12" or more snow.
The typical winter will have only two or three snows of about 1" to 3".
Around here half an inch of snow closes the schools. I couldn't believe it at first.

So tom, it begs the question: When was the last 12" snow? Please don't tell me 9 1/2 years ago or there is a house for sale in Murray as we speak.

Just to let you know, here in Siberia (N. Minnesota) we have a couple of feet of snow on the ground and -20 this morning.

Cj, I found that picture of the cat on the web or someone emailed it to me many years ago, I don't know the cat or the lady holding it. :(
We didn't go to Hemmingway's house, just not enough time as we were with others. We were planning on going down by ourselves this year but after replacing the A/C-heat unit and re-sodding the front yard, next year may be better. Actually when I was planning on going the weather wasn't much better there than it was here. |

OMG!!! Why get out of bed??? How can you get out of bed??
There was a guy I worked with at LTV who was close to retirement. Well, some relative passed away and left him a property in Great Falls, Mt. So he was thinking, "Great! Ready to retire and now I have a place to go".
Well, we hadn't heard from Bill in a while and one of the guys decided to call up there and see how he was doing. This was in a January. When he got Bill's wife on the phone, he said she wasn't just sniffling, she was crying! She said it had been -60 and she hadn't been out of the house in over two weeks (they must have a 3 day growing season up there)!! Anyway, they soon thereafter moved back to Portage---where it is warm; to be near the grandchildren, of course.....Cj |

Seems like it has been four or five years since we had a big snow. I don't remember how many inches of snow we got the last "big one."

I'm ready for a little boring then. If snow is considered 'exciting', I've been living in the fast lane entirely too long now. I don't mind snow, I just don't need to see the Matterhorn on my property every year for months at a time.
I wanna go on my boat. Fish. Relax. Watch the dog chase squirrels around. |

Power was out at my house for 10.5 days, Ken.
Now that was a once in a lifetime event (I HOPE). Utility workers brought in from other states were saying that they had never seen anything like that. Almost the entire western half of KY had severe ice and broken power poles.

No, neither of those places is my house. I was standing in my yard with my back to my house shooting SW in the upper pic and E in the lower pic.
Here's one showing the front of my house.

I have never seen anything like that storm and hope I never do again. There was not a SINGLE TREE of any appreciable size that did not have some of its upper limbs broken anywhere in the area. I had to drive around looking for supplies and kerosene because only places that had generators were operating. No matter how far from home I got, the scenery was the same, ice-covered, broken trees.
You would hear of someone being open that still had some kerosene, and by the time you got there, the line would be a mile long. I stood in line at a local bulk plant for hours waiting my turn to get kerosene for my kerosene heater. I had already been in line a long time when I stepped out to take this picture.

You should have heard the loud popping sounds when major limbs broke. It sounded like guns being fired. That went on for a day or two after the storm passed.
Sorry to (freezing) rain on your parade. :)
I said that was a once in a lifetime event, but I think it happens even less often than that, maybe once every couple hundred years.

Great photos, Tom, of a tragic event...I'll bet from a forester's perspective, it made you sick. We experience some ice storms occasionally down here in SE Kansas, and I must say, I much rather have the snow vs the ice. I am sure you will agree, it is an eerie feeling sticking your head out the door at night and hearing the trees cracking and come crashing down...almost like a war zone and often looks much that way after it is over. I've said a little prayer that one doesn't fall on my house or your car.
Seejay, you might want to trade that snow blower in for a chain saw, a chipper, snd a generator before heading south. |

You know, Tim, that was EXACTLY what I thought as I looked at the wooded areas and saw that every tree had some major upper limbs broken off. It really DID look like scenes from war newsreels.
And, yes, it did break my heart to see that virtually every single tree had severe damage. You have to wonder if the exposed wounds might make the trees susceptible to disease or insect attack.
When those bigger limbs let go, it sounded like high powered rifle shots, and then like you said, you would hear the crashing sounds as the limbs fell through the lower parts of the tree, doing more damage to the tree as they came down.
To make matters worse, we had several days of very cold weather right after the ice storm came through. No one had power, and the outdoor temperatures at night were in the low teens and might have been down in the single digits. Do you remember, Roger, if we saw night time temps below 10°F immediately after the ice storm?

We seem to be into a solid week- maybe more- of overnight lows in the 30's.... 32 last night, 30 tonight; though we might get a reprieve to 40 tomorrow night before it dips again for the weekend.

OKAY! We former Region Rats in Middle TN are getting a good reminder of the winters back in the day!!!
We are expected to get 6 inches!!! And the temperature is to dip to 9 degrees tomorrow night. So, yeah, not exactly the depth nor the degree experienced in Da Region; but for here, it is like Alaska. Yesterday schools announced closing for today and State and Metro offices closed at noon. There are already wrecks all over the area---and there will be more.
It is the hills and valleys of the side roads to the neighborhoods that make it so difficult for people to get around--that and the macho need to show how fast they can go, rather than going steadily up a hill and down a hill.....
This is a good, wet snow that would have been a delight to me 60 years ago...

Nothing yet here at Madisonville, where I work.
I think we are supposed to get most of the snow during the night and into tomorrow morning. I believe were are supposed to get about 4" to 6" accumulation.

We have what looks to be about 5" to 6" of snow here at my house. According to AccuWeather, we have had 0.54" of precipitation in the last 24 hours, which is the rain equivalent, of course.
Depending on how wet the snow is, I believe the ratio is somewhere around 10" of snow for every inch of rain. That correlates pretty well with what I see for snow accumulation in my yard.

This is a good reason to stay in the house. Snow is pretty as long as you don't have to be out in it. I remember the -0 temps, the deep snow and wind on my way to work at dear old "Mother" Inland Steel. I sure don't miss it.
