I have fond memories of "growing up" in Hammond, those years where I was betwixt and between youth and adulthood. After I reached the age where I "discovered" girls, I bounced between exhilaration and heartache as I loved and lost, which eventually taught me meaning of true love.
Many of those memories involve things we used to do (sneaking into the Calumet Drive-In in car trunks, tobogganing in Palos Park, IL),and places where we partied (the Dunes). What places in "the Region" stand out in your dating memories?

Is Bobbie Beach the same place we called Bare-a** beach? |

Not sure, Duane. I never heard it called that.
If memory serves me, it is where the marina is now or very close to that spot.

This is close to home! B.A. Beach and Bobbie Beach were pretty much the same area, Lake Michigan near the end of Calumet Avenue. To me, B.A. Beach was the beach just south of State Line generating plant. Bobbie Beach was north/west of Calumet Avenue to the "migrant trap". South/east of Calumet avenue was called "Flatrock".
The "migrant trap" is the wooded bit where someone dumped broken up concrete 50 - 100 years ago. (I presume it was the railroad to protect the lines near the beach. I remember some disused rail lines near Flatrock that were within 50 feet of the water.) This wooded area became overgrown with cottonwoods and is some sort of birder's paradise because so many migrating bird species use it as a stopover. I have not been by recently, but I think Hammond made it into some sort of park.

I think tat this was also called Hammond Beach. When we were kids it was hard to tell since it was close to Whiting Beach.
Last time I was there was around 1989-'90 with my kis). Nothing left of it now, just a dumb casino.

I spent my high school "beach" days in two places. The first place was the Gary Dunes. Why there and not Hammond Beach or Whiting Park? Probably because my fellow students at Noll came from all over the Calumet Region, and my school mates from Gary and Miller knew about "the Dunes."
The second place is Wolf Lake Park, where I worked at the concession stand for a couple of seasons. It was easy work and loads of fun.
If you want to get a glimpse at what the Gary Dunes were like in my day, rent the flick titled "Four Friends." |

Sorry Paddy - but Four Friends was shot around 1980 (released in Dec. of 1981)....not quite what Miller Beach, West Beach or the State Park looked like in our day. Having said that, I had an experience like you...we only went to Whiting Beach at the 4th of July. Other than that ALL trips were to the Dunes (Miller beach during the 1970's had already become an undesirable place) but I had some Bishop Noll friends from Gary (a girlfriend - or so I wished) on Johnson Street). Also, I have a friend (quite a bit younger than me) who was actually in the beach scene of the Four Friends movie. And some of that movie was shot at EC Roosevelt High School and has some of the actual teachers in the movie too! |

I know that things changed in the 1970's, but the beach scenes in the film were dead on with my experiences at the Dunes - short of the insemination scene.
The film's scenes that depicted the EC and the steel mills also resonated strongly with me. |
