I will side with Tom on this.
While I think the '55, '56' and '57 Chevy's looked great, somehow GM did something horrible to the '58 Olds and Pontiac. The body style was similar, but far more bulky. My neighbor had a 58 Pontiac and during the cold winters, we'd love to watch him try to get it started. He'd shoot massive amounts of ether down the carb and a huge flame would leap from under the hood!
I've got a nominee for runner up to the '58 Olds....that would be the 1958 Chevy Biscayne. Here's a link to a photo (not mine) http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs25/f/2008/126/8/0/1958_Chevy_Biscayne_by_BlueLoneWolf.png
After making great cars in 55 thru 57, Chevy went for a massive body style change... and how ugly. It only lasted 1 year, as the 1959 was a complete redesign. Our family had a '58 Biscayne for about 7 years. It was pink over white, with hub caps (not wheel covers). I remember the metal over the headlights rusted completely out, my dad had it redone and in 3 years it rusted completely out again. |

This is so revealing! It just shows what different tastes we all have, and that's what makes life so interesting. I happen to think the '58 Chevy is one of the coolest looking cars ever built. Now, I am not at all fond of the one in that picture, Duane, because of the color combo, but a solid black '58 Chevy is way up near the top of my list for all time beautiful cars!
Duane, it's the 58 Olds that I think is ugly, but you kept saying 57 Olds. I think the 57 Olds looks pretty good. Did you really mean 57, or did you mean 58?

Sorry Tom... I did mean 1958. Funny coincidence...there was an old car show I stopped at on the way home from work, and they had a '58 Pontiac in it. First one I've seen in years. And yes, it was a 58 Pontiac that my neighbor had. It was customized with a white and purple color combination....while it wasn't an Olds, I thought of you.
And now on to your pictures of the 1958 Impala....therein lies the difference. The debut of the Impala that year was as a 2 door sports vehicle. While I really don't like the body style compared to the 55-57 chevy's, I can see that the Impala has some appeal. If you remember, it was the car that Toad rode around in during the American Graffitti movie.
But it was the "poor family man's" version in the form of the 4 door Biscayne that I find so revolting....probably because I had to ride in the back seat of one for so many years. |

Thanks for the beautiful pix of the chevy and olds guys. My ballot for the ugliest has got to be the Buick Opal. I liked the big cars although they didn't have THAT much room inside. Not like, say, a 55 Buick

Here are some more pictures of classic cars, Tom, if you are interested. There are four pages of pictures. Be sure to blow them up to full size for the best viewing.

Thanks much, Tom. There used to be a place here called Old Town. They had a classic car show every week. Neat. I never owned a classic, just commons. I remember most of the muscle cars from U.S. 30 Dragstrip. My first was a 53 Bel-Air. I sure felt a lot safer in them than in todays plastic wonders. tom w |

Oh Tom! How can you pick on a '58 Olds that way? I would go a long way for one of those.
Ugly would be a Corvair, but the '51 Stud that 'Jim R' pointed out is a great contender. I used to know a girl that had a face like a '51 Stud.
But I believe that the ugliest crap of ALL time out there are these Nissan Cubes. I can't imagine what kind of thinking would cause someone to actually want one of those hideous anomalies.

Thanks for the pix, Tom. My first car (in 1968) was a '62 Chevy Biscayne - after which I graduated to the only new car I've ever owned: a '69 Daytona Yellow Z/28 Camaro. To this day I still miss it!
Is that white Nova Super Sport a '67? I also had one of those. Mine was bright blue. It had a de-smogged '75 GM 350 and a 4.88 rear end. If you weren't careful it could literally sprain your neck. [8D]

My vote for the hands down ugliest car is the 1963 Mercury. I had a friend who's parents had one and it was really bad. It had the slanted rear window that rolled down into the trunk. Stubby little fins on the rear fenders. A grill that looked like someone that could eat corn through a picket fence. Need I go on. This one get's my two thumbs down.

Guys,
I think the 1958 Ramblers were pretty down right ugly. Had a neighbor, who had one and we nicknamed it the milk truck. It sounded like one. I think it had a one barrel carb and three on a tree. Don't think it would have made even a 1/4 mile at US 30 dragstrip and I think you would have to play Fred Flinstone to get it on the expressway.

I don't know cars like youse guys; but I sure as heck remember what color Ricky Nelson wanted to paint his jalopy (however much it clashed with Ozzie and Harriet's artistic sensibilities).
Do you remember?
Hint: the color starts with h.

Just like radio could create a picture in your mind without your eyes actually seeing it, B&W TV had lots of color in it, didn't it?
I don't know what color Ricky's jalopy was.
But here's another question.
On Leave it to Beaver, what color was Lumpy Rutherford's old car?
Hint, it was two words, with an adjective coming before the actual color, and the beginning letters of each were....S and P. |
