BTW---the drink in the green bottle was only 7 oz. and was a clear carbonated, not a cola, but a soft drink. 7Up.... Okay, guys. I gotta have some time to bring up at least one more jingle.
It is interesting that I never heard of either Wanzer milk or Deans Milk. and that the 7Up TV commercial I remember, no one else has heard of or remembers--the Chicken Bones
candy jingle was a radio jingle and a friend of my father's just happened to have brought some to our house, so the jingle stuck with me, having had the candy.

How about a couple of TV-show theme song quizzes? Now, this is a special category in which the songs used were not composed for the shows. This should make it a little tougher.

Jim,
That is the correct answer! [:D]
We still have the 10" Decca LP that our Dad - a long-time Chicago radio personality - brought home from work back in the 1950s. My brother Larry (HassoBenSoba) also has the recording - either another old LP or a CD; I forget which. It may still be available somewhere.
It was rare that WGN ever had time at the end of the show to allow the song to play all the way through. But I recall it happening a couple of times, and how I was struck by what a pretty song it actually is - especially the middle section. Pefect music for those innocent, enchanting childhood times of the 1950s.

Tom W (keeping the replies straight here),
I grew in a very music-oriented family. Probably the single biggest advantage was my Dad, who was a Chicago radio personality from the early 1950s to late 1995. He used to bring home records from the radio stations, many of them given out by the record-company PR guys. This is how we discovered a lot of music - TV show themes, soundtracks, jazz, dixieland, classical, comedy, etc. Our basement looked like a record store. From this we gained considerable knowledge about songs, one of them being "Monkey on a String". As I mentioned, I still have the old Decca 10" LP that features this recording. One afternoon - back in maybe 1958/'59? - I pulled the out record and put it on, sampling each track. As soon as "Monkey" began to play I instantly recognized it as the "G. Goose" theme. And that's how I found out what the song is.
I guess you can say that in this way we were definitely blessed. [:)]

OK all, here's the answer to question #2:
The song used for "The Early Show" theme was Leroy Anderson's "The Syncopated Clock":

1) What was the song used for the "Garfield Goose & Friends" show theme?
2) What was the song used for "The Early Show" theme (I forget which channel this show appeared on. I think it came on around 3-4 p.m.)?

Pro; O.K. that splains a lot. You definately had a neat childhood. My dad bought an old upright piano with a player. I was about 6 yrs. I would play a few bars then duplicate it. I was the only kid my age that played Rockmananoff. Then I listened to the T.V. and play the themes. Here we are 60 years later and I still play a keyboard by ear. Thats progress, huh? Tom w |

THANK YOU!
It was so good to hear the Garfield Goose theme song again. I never knew the real name of the song.
As far as the Syncopated Clock, if I had heard that tune somewhere, it would have driven me ABSOLUTELY nuts trying to remember where I used to hear it. I don't think I would have ever remembered that it was from the Early Show.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the great trip down memory lane!

Then he would say something like First cal to breakfast, people everywhere. America awake the breakfast club is on the air.

I had a very clear mental image of a big old Indian hunched over his drum singing this crazy chant.

Jim Moran had the best movies and I recall they only had two very long commercials and they would back the film up when the commercial was over in case you forgot what was going on. Howard Miller has a guest dj part in some late 50's rock and roll film which tells the story of 'Pete and Honey's' rise to fame and success. Anybody know the title?quote: Originally posted by tom w

Re: Wonder Bread- I remember the front door of old "Grandma's Delicatessan" on Kennedy Avenue (which my brother Mike wrote about on one of these threads somewhere); there was an old metal-plate advertisment bolted to the door that showed a loaf of Wonder Bread with the slogan "Helps Build Strong Bodies 8 Ways".
So the bread apparently picked up 4 more WAYS at some point. |

Buffalo Bob used to tell us 12 big ways but in the early days Howdy told us 8 big ways. I'll bet one of the ways was gaining weight!quote: Originally posted by HassoBenSoba

My favorite continues to be Cocoa Wheat which I can only get by having someone import it for me. Thank you Joe and Jeremy!!

Sure do, and that is another one I may never have thought of again.
What makes us think about these old commercials? What makes these memories all of a sudden pop into our conscious thoughts?

Answer to my previous quiz question:
1962-1963
In 1962 Parliament continued with the claim "tobacco tastes best when the filter's recessed" and also began to stress "Parliament gives you Extra Margin" in advertising. This effort was supported with increased media expenditure, up from $6,503,200 in 1961 to $7,604,000 in 1962, but sales only moved from 9.4 to 10.0 million.
In mid 1963 copy was changed to "there never was a better time, you never had a better reason to switch to Parliament" and "Extra Margin" was given as the reason. "Hi-Fi" was added to the brand name in advertising early in 1963 but was dropped after a few months. Advertising expenditure was decreased slightly to $7,194,700, and sales were almost unchanged from 1962. The market share remained static at 2.0% at the end of 1963.
The above is a quote from the history of the Parliament brand at morningcigarette.com

Not only did it help build strong bodies, but those Wonder Bread wrappers served to wrap up the hot dogs at Hot Dog John's in East Chicago. More info posted elsewhere on this forum! |

Hi Tom;
Hows Mama?
Working off of my sometimes memory, Marcus Motors was located on Archer Avenue in Chicago. Back then, the radio stations were replete with really clever little jingles and slogans along with some high-profile pitchmen. For some odd reason many of those commercials are etched in my memory word-for-word. Tom W |

Georgeann's recovery from the surgery is going great, Tom. Thanks for asking. We go back to the doc this coming Monday, so keep praying for good test results on those lymph nodes.
I guess I still don't remember Marcus Motors or their commercials.

Sugar Corn Pops must have been one of the first sugar coated serials. I have some of the Wild Bill radio shows where "Panhandle Jim" is telling mom that she can reuse the aluminium bag in the Pops box for storage and lunches etc. He even has a jingle:
Kids love pops
Moms love pops and
Pops love pops
By the way the horses names were Buckshot and Joker |

This is a two-parter. The first part is pretty easy.
"Double your pleasure, double your fun,
____________ , ____________ , __________ Gum!"
Part two. What is the connection between this commercial and Hammond?

Doublemint Gum! The original Doublemint Twins, Jane and Joan Boyd, were from Hammond.
I had forgotten their names and had to look them up.

You are correct, but Boyd was their stage name. What was their real last name? A hint: It's the same as a noted Hammond car dealer.

My wife lived her whole life om 35th St. in Chicago which is right up against the Wrigleys factory. Her neighborhood smells every bit as good as the Queen Anne factory on Hoffman Street in North Hammond where they made Turtles. Tom W |

Right you are! The Knoerzer twins attended Bishop Noll a couple years ahead of me. Knoerzer Cadillac was on the northeast corner of Hohman and Conkey. |

This bit of trivia might interest you guys, and might not. However, I found it fascinating when if went driving southwest of Nashville, the town of Wrigley was built around the Wrigley families iron refinery that eventually poisoned the water and thus went defunct.

Thanks BobK,
Your info is more official than I could find and BTW what I found reported that the quality of the iron source was too poor for Wrigley to continue business.
