Hey, it WAS Beneficial Finance who was telling people to ask for "Friendly Bob Adams." wasn't it, the same company that had the cool little jingle with the "Toot, Toot" in it?

Now wait a minute! I have now found on the Internet articles that have "Friendly Bob Adams" associated with three different companies, American General, Beneficial Finance, and Household Finance. I'm now leaning toward Household Finance as being the right company. Does anyone know for sure?

Damfino.
However, among the myriad nostalgic memories still lodged in my brain is the '50s jingle:
"Never borrow money needlessly, just when ... you ... must;
Borrow from the folks at HFC, the name ... you ... trust;
Borrow confidently--
From H ... F ... C"
Not to mention
"From the land of Sky Blue Waters ...
Comes the beer refreshing"
accompanied by the Hamms Bear running about, on the Friday Night Fights, and
Brushy Beaver (I think), singing
"Brusha, brusha, brusha,
With the new Ipana"
tooth paste on the Mickey Mouse Club.
Somewhere in one of his stories, Shep (ironically) proposes a Boy Scout merit badge for future ad-men, for successfully mastering "the pitch."

Bill! Wow! I remember that jingle, now that you have quoted it. I can almost hear it being sung. I do think that it was HFC that invited us to call Friendly Bob.
Those Hamm's Beer commercials that you mentioned were great. You can find some of them on Youtube. I wish they still played them on TV. That poor old Hamm's Bear could sure get into some predicaments, huh?
Remember the Gillette commercials on the Friday Night Fights? I can't remember any details, just that they used a parrot and the jingle started out "Look sharp."

Tom,
IIRC it was Bucky Beaver (Ipana Toothpaste).
For all interested, there are oodles of these old TV commercials on YouTube, along with scores of vintage TV shows. It's a nostalgiac's paradise! [:)]

Does anyone remember the Chicago auto dealer who advertised on late-night TV? He sponsored a movie, and his commercials entailed him showing cars, like lots of cars, during the commercials that dragged on forever. Far from the fast-talking pitch men in today's car commercials, this guy was slow and deliberate as he described every feature of each car as they were pulled before the camera.
His monologue would run like, "This 1955 Pontiac is a four-door sedan with only 18,000 miles. It has cloth seats. It is equipped with power steering and brakes, and has ZZZZZZZ. |

Paddy,
Can't say I recall those commercials.
Does anyone remember the Victory Auto Wreckers commercial from the not-so-vintage 1970s? "Stop! That old car may be worth money!", where the long-haired guy opens the door of his Imapala and it falls off onto the pavement? Would you believe that they're still running that same exact commercial almost 44 years later. [:0]

The Gillette comercial that I remember went: To look sharp, every time you shave. To feel sharp, and be on the ball. Just be sharp use Gillette Blue Blades for the quickest slickest shave of all.

I am also amazed when I see the Empire Carpet commercials. Same guy, same voice, same jingle, same basic phone number except now it's toll free and the guy is a cartoon likeness. By the way did you have any relatives on the Hammond Police Dept.? Take care Tom W Hammond Tech 55-58 |

It might have been Linn Burton and he did commercials for Bert Weinman Ford. "Radio, heater, whitewalls"

Mike,
That commercial for Victory Auto Wreckers still is on; you probably know that. It ran on channel 9 during lunch today. I like the big leather watch band and late 50's/early 60's junk cars in the junkyard.

Hey everybody. I worked, as a manager,for GFC Loan Company from 1979 through 1996. Friendly Bob Adams was with GFC. (General Finance Corporation)It was just a LOGO with a man's head and a phone stuck to his ear. The company was sold to Credithrift and then changed it's name to American General Finance.
Also, I saw someone misprint the words to HFC. I was also a manager with them from 1996 to 2002 and the sentence is "borrow from the oldest company... from folks, you trust.... Thanks for the memories. Mike |

Mike, welcome to Sheptalk and thanks for your contribution, which I hope will be the first among many.
Bring Friendly Bob Adams with you next time. [:D]
