Vern Guzek Date: 10-18-2008 By: Pro2am	Does anyone here remember Vern Guzek, the auto mechanic who spent his career at Bert's Shell Station on the corner of Kennedy and 173rd St. in Hessville? Sadly, Vern passed away on 9/11/08. This is his obituary from the NW IN Times. 11-12-2008 ( Reply#: 2431 )	BobC	I used to live two houses away from the Guzek family on Schneider Ave. in Hammond. Vern and his older brother Ted were outstanding basketball players on some very good Morton teams in the early 1950s. Ted went on to play at Butler. Their brother Bob was a three-sport athlete at Morton in the early 1960s and signed a pro contract as a pitcher, but I think he came up with arm trouble. I played with their younger brother Tommy, who was about my age. Tommy went to Gavit, not Morton, when the district lines were changed after Gavit was built. The brother listed in the obit as Wally was known in the neighborhood as Junior, and died of leukemia when he was a teenager. My mom used to bake cakes for him when he was sick. I'm sorry to hear that Vern passed away. He seems to have left a rich legacy of children and grandchildren.
