Hey, great conversation starter! (I hope!)
I don't remember ever going to the Ridge Road Drive-In Theatre, but that doesn't mean that I didn't. I have forgotten exactly where on Ridge Road it was located. Where was it in relation to the intersection of Indianapolis Blvd and Ridge Road?
What was the name of the drive-in theatre on Cline Avenue? I'm pretty sure I went to that one a couple times. Also, there used to be a drive-in theatre way up north on Calumet Avenue, right? Was it called The 41 Outdoor?
Drive-in theatres were COOL!

Thanks, Cartoonguy! I used each of those links, and I enjoyed the reading.
Man, I sure miss "the good old days!"

Ridge Road Drive In was in the Calumet Township area--maybe Burr Ave. or Colfax Ave. and Ridge Road? not far from Calumet Twshp High School.
I remember seeing "The African Queen" there in about 1952--since I was not even a teen yet, that was seen with my sister, her husband, and their son about 2 yrs old. The great memory about that was that we sat fighting off mosquitoes in the hot summer while watching Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn struggle with MOSQUITOESs!
I also remember seeing an Elvis movie that was set in New Orleans, but don't remember the name of that movie. I was a new Morton grad at the movie with a college sophomore home for a few days in the summer who was trying to decide whether to marry his college girlfriend or if just maybe he had passed up a good thing about 2 years earlier. I helped him decide-- because I had moved on after he had dumped me for a girl in his high school. He did marry that college girlfriend. I don't remember the mosquitoes that evening... [}:)]

Yes, I remember going to all four of those drive in's and a few more.
The Hammond Outdoor was built on a filled in swamp behind where K-Mart used to be on Indianapolis Blvd. No wonder there were so many mosquitos! I remember going to see the Beatles' movie "Let it Be" there...the sound coming through those tiny metal speakers was horrible. I also remember that when it got colder out, they would give you an in-car heater that you plugged into the speaker pole.
The 41 Outdoor was in North Hammond, really in the midst of the Oil Refineries. Once it closed, the area was used as a flea market for several years.
Y& W was in Gary, if I remember correctly. They had 2 or more screens.
Ridge Road drive in was my favorite tho, and it seemed to be more nicely kept up than the others. It was located on Ridge road and Kennedy Avenue, I think. The place is now a shopping center.
South of Schererville there was the Twin Oaks drive in (is that the right name?) They showed X-rated movies.
And for those of you who STILL want to experience an outdoor theatre either for old times, or to share with you kids or grand-kids, there is still an operating outdoor theater in Valporaiso, IN. While visiting the Region a few years back, I took my kids there to see Shrek and they loved the outdoor theater experience. The place was packed, so hopefully they are doing good business and will stay around a while. When the show first starts, they play the "Beep Beep Song" and everyone plays along beeping their car horns at the key places in the song. It is a FUN time. Here's the link. Of course it is closed for the winter, but will reopen in Spring.

Your post reminds me of the tragedy that occurred this past winter. Two blondes were found frozen to death in their car at a drive-in movie theater up in Minnesota, probably not too far from you. They were waiting for the show to start and were really excited about seeing "Closed for Winter."
