Hi Wolfen! Looks like you just joined us today. Welcome! Glad you are contributing to the discussion.
I have vague recollections of going to the Pow Wow a time or two, but it certainly was not one of my usual hang-outs. You know, I almost think that maybe my dad painted the lines in their parking lot and that I helped him on that job. Dad striped parking lots as a sideline business, and I often helped him.
I grew up on Woodward Avenue in Hammond during the 50s and 60s. I lived only six houses north of 165th Street on Woodward Ave, which runs parallel to Calumet and is two blocks east of it. Wasn't the Pow Wow on 165th? Maybe it was 169th. Wasn't there also another drive in very close to the Pow Wow? Was it called the Patio?
I was born in 1949 and was graduated from Hammond High in 1967. We had our 40th class reunion the first weekend in August. It was a blast.
Tell us a little about yourself.

The Pow-Wow was on the north side of 169th, a short distance west of Kennedy Avenue (very close to Morton HS). It was a low, wooden structure painted white, with lots of windows. I was in it only once or twice (I spent most of my money on books, rather than burgers).
According to the phone book, a KFC now stands where the Pow-Wow used to be.

The Patio Drivein was on the corner of Idaho Ave. and 169th St., right across from the water tower/tank. There's a White Hen convenience store there now. I lived one block north of the old Patio drivein, I always got my Green River sodas there.

Thanks for your response. I haven't heard the term "Green River soda".
That, in and of itself, is a trip down memory lane.
Thanks again and have a Super Day.
OBTW - Do you remember the "Large Tomato Cheese Burger" and a Bucket chocolate Malt at Pow Wow? Next to Maid Rite, best burger and malt around. Steak & Shake a hot third.

We used to go to Janc (before I was old enough to see over a dashboard) and for 25 cents you got a hotdog, chips and a "Green River". By the time I was old enough to see over the dash and drive too, it was Pow-Wow, Park View, Blue Top and places like that. This would have been '67. At that time who cared what the chow tasted like, as long as the women were there.
I do not remember the Patio though. The water tower, sure! Climbing up that thing and stealing the red light off the top without getting caught was a big challenge. Rumor was, if you got caught up there, you got to paint the tower as punishment. Sounded like one of those Judge Obermiller things. Anybody remember him? The "Spanking Judge"?

Wolfen, welcome to memory lane.
I was a carhop at the Pow Wow the summer after my freshman year in college.
And, oh my yes, I remember the Tomato Burger from heaven. They used the beefsteak tomato and a slice fit the burger, which was made there, not frozen and preformed.
I also lived on the east side of the Pow Wow when I was 12 and a 6th grader at Morton.
The Pow Wow was the third building on the North side 169th after you crossed Kennedy going west. There was Farris' Standard Oil station, the house I lived in and the Pow Wow.
That was in the '50s and early 60's.

WOW! thanks CJ. The sister and brother-in-law I lived with in that place will like seeing this, too. He worked at Farris' station before he bought his own station on 165th--it was across the street from Candes. AND, NO, NO, a thousand times NO I did not find Valpo's purportedly good Italian beef. The restuarant that advertises online that they have a beef boat--described as a sandwich in a bowl, had never heard of it.
I ate there, but it was not the best Italian food : (
I did not make it up to Hessville this visit. There were so many old friends, we just enjoyed being together and living in our memories while sharing the pictures and tales of families that have grown two generations since we had been together.
Again, CJ thank you for the picture. I am going to send it to my brother to share with my sister and brother-in-law who now live in Arizona. They will be in Da Region this month for a wedding.
Keep those pics coming---we may have the start of a pictorial history of Kennedy Avenue!

One of the better places I have found in Valpo is a place called "Greek's Pizza". It actually tastes like something Italian, not that foul 'ketchup & hamburger meat' style that so many 'pizza joints' have taken on today. How does it stack up to Cande's? It doesn't. Nothing does. Finding another Cande's will be finding the Holy Grail of Italian food; all else pales in comparison.

I'd love to have that done. I defer to you guys as to whether it needs to be run by Jim Clavin.
Also, I realize that the work to be done will be yours and not mine. I don't think I have any significant contributions I haven't already posted--and that is a class photo.
And CJ, I am going to endeavor to look you up on my next trip up to La Porte. Ken had suggested I do that this time, but with my shyness and the limited time, I didn't even try.

As long as we are on it, all this talk about the old photos compelled me to dig out a bunch of old slides that were laying around and I found about a dozen pix of the '67 Big Snow that my dad must have taken. Some of them still have those concrete obelisk street markers they used long ago. Since they are slides, I will have to scan and clean them up a bit.........Cj |

Hey, I would LOVE to see old photos of Hessville posted, and I didn't even live in the Hessville Section of Hammond. I still passed through Hessville occasionally, even though I didn't live there.
Pictures from the 50s and 60s showing ANY part of Hammond would be interesting to me.
As far as Mr. Clavin, if you guys will remember when a few people expressed concern about server space, I Emailed him, and he replied to say that we are nowhere near server capacity.
I'd say "just do it."

Bring on those slides of the BIG SNOW! I was serving Uncle Sam at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas at the time and enjoying sunshine and much warmer weather. We moved back to Da Region in the summer of 1968 and stayed there until 1975.
I took hundreds of photos of the area in the late 1950s. Unfortunately, most of them belonged to Morton High School since I was a member of the Photo Club there and took them for school publications and for the Hessvillite. If only I had saved those negatives for myself...... Oh well. Life is full of "what ifs."

Does anyone out there remember the Hitching Post on the SE corner of 170th and Kennedy? Being just a block from MHS, it was a popular hangout for those lunchtime burgers and fries for many students. An ad for it appears in the Top Hat just about every year through 1961 at 7003 Kennedy Avenue. Then, all of a sudden in 1962 there is an ad for Dressler Studio (Photography) at that address. What happened???
By the way, did somebody say PATIO DRIVE-IN?

Hey Ken!
I do remember the Hitchin' Post, though I was a Senior at OPMHS before I could afford to eat there once a week--that was 1957-58 and I had worked the summer of 1957 at Kelly's Drive-In, so had my own pocket change to splurge at the place to be in my black sweater and yellow corduroy skirt (known as senior cords).
Somehow the Patio Drive-In does not ring a bell with me--though the Tilden-4 exchange does as does the Sheffield exchange. I had to look up that word, exchange, to be sure I was using it correctly--it just came naturally, though now we don't use it--here is the definition I found that fits the use: a central office or station of operations providing telephone service.
Was the Patio Drive-In over the 169th street viaduct from the Pow-Wow?

I still can't remember the Patio. I remember when that whole area east of the water tower was all wooded. We used to scramble on motorcycles back in there. In fact, I lived in the apartment buildings just east of the water tower in the mid 70's on 6945 Patricia Lane, but I can't remember the name of the apt. complex or the Patio. There was a liquor store where the Patio used to be. Now it is some kind of convenient store.
What year was the Patio and where did you get the pic?
By the way, Ken, I've scanned the snow photos, I just have to color correct them a bit..........Cj |

OK Somebody wanted '67 snow pix. Here are a few. I did not take these, probably my dad. I didn't even know I had these until last weekend.
We lived in the 6600 block of Arizona Ave. This one is of the garage, east of the house.

This is looking across the street, leaning to the north.

This is at the end of the block looking west. Notice the old concrete obelisk still there. John Eastwood's church would be directly to my left, across the street.

This is the house next door to the north, taken from our driveway. This is his driveway.

SC,
The Patio was over a half mile east (across Kennedy) of the Pow Wow on 169th between Parrish and Idaho Avenues.
Notice that I said that the Hitchin' Post was a popular hangout for many students, not necessarily this student. I probably ate there fewer times that you did. My big money making job was as stock boy at the J.J. Newberry dime store in the Woodmar shopping center for a couple months during the summer of 1958. The pay was minimum wage, whatever it was at that time -- maybe a buck an hour or so.
Hello Cj,
The Patio was across 169th from the water tower. The house in the background with the hip roof is still there -- visible in the Google satellite image.
I didn't completely miss that 1967 snow storm; but at least the roads were clear by the time I got there for a two day or so visit. Thanks for posting the photos. I can still remember some of the houses on Arizona, and especially some of those buildings on the corner of 167th.

Here are a couple more photos:
I had this one laying around since '68. There used to be a gas station,Gardner's Standard, on the NE corner of Kennedy & Kenwood. The fellow in the photo, George Slade, worked there then. George just passed on the 8th of October.

On the left, this is the house that my folks bought on Arizona Ave. This was in 1954. It had originally been built in 1927. Dad resided the place in about '57 (judging from that little monkey in front). It was that dark blue, heavy granulated type of stuff with bright yellow trim (UGH). It has been done over again with white aluminum, this time completly enclosing the porch.

Something says I shouldn't do this, but here goes. The pic on the left is yours truly with his little brother, probably around 62-63. Some guy bought an operational steam engine and would drive it around the country to display. This was somewhere in Hammond. On the right, same two 'kids', only the little guy isn't so little anymore......Cj

wvcogs, thanks so much for posting the picture of the Patio Drive In. My memories of the place must be much later than that photo, I remember the front being enclosed with doors on the east and west side, you went inside to get to the order/pick-up windows that are shown at the front of the building in your photo.
As this is a thread on the Pow-Wow, here's a bit of Pow-Wow trivia. According to my father, when he was a kid, the Pow-Wow building was a Beer Hall! He was a beer can collector, and before they tore the building down, he crawled under the building and recovered a sizable number of very old beer cans that were dumped through a hole in the floor behind the bar.
- Teaser - Was going through some boxes I brought up from clearing out my fathers house after he died, found a sealed package of newspaper clippings my mother packed away. In it was the February 19th, 1967 Chicago Tribune Big Snow insert on the January 26th snowstorm. I thought that package of clippings was lost in the house fire. Scanned it into my computer, 33 pages @ 25.5 MB each. As soon as I can find a place to upload the images that will allow resolution high enough to let one read the printing, I will post a link to the forums.

Boy, I've had my share of meals (?), from “POW-WOW”, and as I recall Indianapolis Boulevard at one time looked like a mini Vegas, with all the big neon signs that lit up the evening skies, but all that changed to more conservative lighting, due to the big energy crises of the 1970’s. |

Thanks wvcogs! That is how I remember Mickie D's back when we went there in my Dad's 1950 Chevy. (Of course that was sometime in the early 1960's - much like Ralphie's family, we always had old cars!)
I remember the first time we went there. My Dad got out of the car and went to the window to order. He must have stood there about 15 minutes and I think the guy that took his order went home, or went on break, so no one had my Dad's order. He was very angry, he got back in the car and we went to a "normal" restaurant.
Does anyone remember Dunkenburger? They were round buildings with orange trim. There was one in East Chicago on Chicago Avenue, not too far from Bishop Noll HS, and I think there was another one in Gary at the 12/20 split. The one in Gary later turned into a Lure Hamburgers, I think. There was another chain buger place on Indianapolis Blvd, not too far from where Blue Top is now, and somewhere near Robert Hall clothing was located.
By the way, speaking of old times, several of us from work (here in Northeast Minnesota) are going to the roller rink tonight. It should be fun. I'll report back later. |

I see to recall that his wife was his office manager and he played WIND in the background. Anybody gone to him lately? He removed my first wisdom tooth.quote: Originally posted by LegulusQ
I remember The Patio very well. I seem to recall a big green sign that doesn't show in Ken's picture from the Top Hat. I actually think the original building was between what is now Dr. Dragomer's office (not 100% sure that is still current) and the convenience store on the north side of 169th.

Pretty sure that The Patio was replaced by the convenience store mini strip mall next to Dr. Dragomer's.
Believe it or not , he's still there. I had my annual check up last week. 53 years in a row. - he graduated in 1956 and I started visiting in 1957. He only works 3 mornings a week now.
He's not into the internet - I asked him last week - was going to suggest he visit the site. |

Here's another interesting shot of the Dunkenburger on Kennedy Avenue. This one is from the Purdue Calumet Library Archives.

The Pow-Wow! What a great place that was. I had a buddy, Ricky Magadz, Noll 66, who worked there and if he saw us in the parking lot would double up on the fries! I believe they had a gravel parking lot. Can anyone confirm this? Tom Pancheri |

Here is the one and only photo I have on Pow Wow property. I took this with a borrowed Polaroid Sun camera in June of '68, which is why the quality is so crappy and the pic has all those waves in it. If you didn't wipe the preservative on it just right the first time, this is what you get. Her name is Pat...Cj |

Gravel. I was only inside the Pow-Wow once (I spent most of my money on books rather than burgers), but I walked down Alexander Ave. every day to Morton (1963-66) and passed near the lot.

Didn't Barbra Streisand sing about those in her song "The Way We Were"?
"Memmories, in the corners of my mind. Misty watercolor memmories..."
"Memmories, may be beautiful and yet, what's too ample to remember, we simply choose to forget!"
Or something like that......

Jim, HA! I just now saw your posting. I am doing well, thank you.
Was wondering if any of you knew Jerry Marlow (his brother, Gene Marlow graduated Morton in 1960.) Jerry was older and worked at one of the steel mills mentioned on this site. LVGT or something like that--he worked 30 years there.
Anyway, a memorial service for him was held on Saturday. He was married to
a relative of my friend Shirley Aumiller Barnes.

Dr. Dragomer's office was on the north east corner of Parrish and 169th, east of that was a vacant lot, the Patio, then Idaho Ave. When the Patio was torn down, a three storefront strip center was erected. West to east, it was a dry cleaner. a liquor store, and a White Hen Pantry (a convenience store).

Last time I was there (2003), Dr. Dragomer was semi-retired, seeing patients only a couple days of the week. If he's still alive, he's well into his 70's. He, his receptionists husband, and my father, were pheasant hunting buddies. His home was on the southeast corner of Parrish and Martha street.

Could very well have, my father knew a lot of people in Hessville and all over Hammond and the surrounding area. We always did our pheasant hunting on a farm a couple hours south, and squirrel and deer hunting at Jasper/Pulaski. He was well known at the sports store downtown, as well as the sports store in Griffith.

Peggy,
Jeff was at those events. I was not. But, it is probably a good guess to think
we may have met sometime in our youth, since we lived next door to the Aumillers
for 30 some years and I do remember Mel from those days.

So Jeff and Butch one in the same. Shirley Jean just wrote to me telling me about going to the funeral. I'm sorry about his passing and now I remember him after reading her letter. I most likely even have a picture of him somewhere from those events.
I remember him telling me that I had not changed since I was a child. That I found hard to believe, but I do find people remember me from way back.
Thanks for clearing things up. |

Hey - I'm trying to verify the color scheme still.
To anyone reading this; if you remember anything about Dunkenburger, please respond to this.
Thanks,
