Oops! Since that was the first post in a new thread, I cannot edit it. I mistakenly posted the same link twice.
Here's the link to my Idaho pics.

Hey Tom and Ken,
I am dogsitting and getting estimates on house stuff--
Tom, you have to wake us up once in awhile : ). By the way, are you in Central KY? I figure you are since you took off from Nashville for your fantastic trip west.
Those are some awesome pics. Thanks for sharing.
Ken, I can't believe you have no photos for us. Of course, I realize your being away might not have been for vacation. Hope all is well.

I'm in west central KY, I guess would be the way to put it. If you drew a line on the map between Evansville, IN, and Nashville, TN, my little town, Greenville, would be almost on that line.
That trip is something I will always remember! I loved every minute of it.

Hey Tom - Glad you got to make it back to your old digs.
How did those clearcuts look some 20 to 30 years on?
Some trees get older, some trees (after harvest) regenerate and get younger. Us....we just get older.
I'm glad you enjoyed your trip and got to meet a few of your old Forest Service buds. Did you know that the FS now has its first woman Chief? Yep, "The times, they are a changin'" (to quote Bobby Zimmerman who was bored and razed up here in my current neighborhood of Duluth and Hibbing, MN.)
My previous neighborhood being only a short jaunt across the Grand Calumet River to Mr. Jean Shepherd's boyhood home. |

Duane:
The Coeur d' Alene National Forest (now known as the Coeur d' Alene River Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest) looked GREAT! I felt right at home. I was afraid that all the logging done in the 70's and 80's would have made those mountains look ugly, but they were as beautiful as ever. Trees really DO grow back. :)
Did you check out my pics from both Montana and from Idaho?

To be back on the Kingston Ranger District, even though there is no more "official" Kingston Ranger District, with my old Forest Service friends and co-workers after 35 years was more enjoyable and more satisfying than words can describe.

Here's a picture that shows a very typical view of the Kingston Ranger District from back in 1971 or 1972. You can see evidence of recent (at that time) logging activity and of not so recent logging activity.

Here's a shot I took while I was out there touring around with my old friends on June 20, 2007. Not the same scene, but representative of what things look like out there now.

I will be going up to La Porte, Indiana in September and will
most likely take US 41 up through Kentucky so I can visit and
spend a day or two in Terre Haute with a family who were my
next door neighbors in Hessville. So, the last few days, I have
been looking at MSN maps on line--the best detailed map online
I have found so far.
My computer had several days of acting up, and I had to go back
over preferences to get straightened out after downloading updates.
I went to bed two nights thinking I'd have to get something repaired
or replaced. [:(] Then Voila! Everything is hunky-dory. [:)]
If any of you like chili rellenos---I have found the best there is at a
La Siesta Restuarant. They use the biggest Pablano peppers and a dry
roasted tomato flavoring that is the best I have tasted this side of
Santa Fe, NM. So, if you have a La Siesta Restuarant in your area,
check it out--that is, if you like Mexican food. I lived in NM a year
in the 70's, and love it.
