Dick Biondi was on WLS radio in Chicago during the early sixties, and I'm sure many folks who come to Sheptalk.com remember him well. Dick was voted America's number one "Top 40" DJ in 1961 and 1962. (WLS was a 50,000 watt clear channel station that could be tuned in almost anywhere in the U.S. at night.)
At age 73, good old Dick Biondi is back on the air at a Chicago station, 94.7 FM, WZZN. Dick's show is on weeknights from 9 PM until Midnight CDST.
Dick has just been given permission by the program director to make his Friday night show an all request show. He had his first all request show this past Friday night, and it was a blast. You can either phone in or email your song requests.
If you enjoyed listening to John Records Landecker, who DJ'd in the late sixties in Chicago, you can tune him in from 3 PM to 7 PM weeknights at WZZN. Yep, he's back on the air, too!
They play Oldies from the 50's, 60's, and early 70's around the clock at WZZN. It's a great station, and you can listen to WZZN, even if you are far outside their broadcast area, because the station streams on the Internet. Here is the link.

I love the fact that the song in the number 40 position on the Silver Dollar Survey you posted is "Who stold the Kishka" (although they misspelled it - I bet they didn't get that Kishka from Marusczak's butcher shop in Hammond!!)
Can you imagine a song like that making the top 40 today? I can just hear someone calling in on a Casey Casem long distance dedication and requesting Who stold the Kishka! It was great to see all the old DJ's - Dex Card, Dick Biondi, Ron Riley and the others. |

Duane, I wasn't referring to (ugh) that song in the #40 slot -- but to the ones at the TOP of the list! [:D] I'm still haunted by "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" and many others ... every time I hear them.
Also on the original thread I had a link to the single best source of Oldies I've found: http://www.mymusicmaker.com/ They have a VAST catalog; they make custom CDs, $15 for 15 songs. My Oldies collection now stands at 1600+ great titles. Anyone who's interested, I can send you a chronological list. Bill, as someone who is approaching his 45 r.p.m. birthday, I would say that I feel that 1964-1967 were better years for pop music. Apparently you share the same opinion of the Beatles as Shep [:D]. That being said, I think I would rather listen to a good chunk of that '63 survey than much of today's music (even "Who Stole The Kiska!)[8D]
P.S.: The Ventures song "2,000 lb Bumblebee" was actually played at John Belushi's graveside service. |

As for me - all the 60's stuff is good. Pre Beatles is more pop music. After 63, it is more British Invasion, even the American bands changed style. I've always liked groups like the Searchers and especially the one hit wonders (or is that One-ders and pronounced Oh-nee ders - get it?) like Unit 4+2 and their great song Concrete and Clay.
But now as an older person, I really appreciate the romance and melody of the 1950's doo-wop. Those were real performers. Even on the PBS specials, where the surviving members of the groups reconvene to perform, the 1950's groups WAY outperfom the 1960's bands.
I'm still waiting to see a PBS special with Ron Terry (remember his polka show on WGN?), Crazy Carosa(the crown prince of Polka) and the Merrymakers, the Ampolaires, and all those other Polka Bands from Club 505 in Hegwisch!! Now there would be a show!! |

I also enjoy a lot of 50s music, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Elvis (I went to Graceland twice w/my big Elvis fan friend & boy, let me tell you, it's a mecca of Slob Art[:)]!), as well as the doo-wop & R&B groups & it's sad that you don't hear them on oldies stations anymore. The earliest songs are from the mid-60s & they usually play lots of 70s music [:0]. Also, the oldies stations only play the big hits over & over again.
P.S.: There's a doo-wop show broadcast on Salem (MA) State College radio (91.7 FM) every Saturday night 7-9PM called Uncle Henry's Basement that has been on the air for nearly 20 yrs. now. |

Man, diskojoe, you really oughta give a listen to WZZN. They get back into the 50's a lot. They promote themselves as a station dedicated to the music of the 50's, 60's, and early 70's.

I found the Zombies version of "I Love You" on iTunes, and when I listened to the free sample, I recognized the song immediately. It's a pretty good song.
I have not been able to find that song by the group, People. If it's really good, how about requesting it for tonight's show?

Actually, unlike Shep, I admire many of the Beatles' early love songs, and early British Invasion groups. For Doo-Wop (besides those PBS spectaculars), go to http://www.palmsradio.com/ ; they have special in-depth shows devoted to various genres (doo-wop, rockabilly, etc.) Also noteworthy is the Solid Gold Oldies channel carried by Comcast cable tv -- nothing but 50s and 60s with (occasionally) a little 70s thrown in ... a lot of variety and many seldom-heard classics.
Some oldies artists have their own web sites: Lesley Gore, Lou Christie, Neil Sedaka, Paul Anka, the great songwriter Carole King, and Dee Dee (of Dick and Dee Dee). There are also official sites for artists no longer with us: Gene Pitney, Del Shannon, Ricky Nelson, etc ... not to mention unofficial sites. You can find many more if you search.

Now this is getting freaky. Just 3 days ago I was looking for songs and I tried to find "I love you" by People. Couldn't find it anywhere, even on I-tunes. I remember there was both a short version and a long version, (with a long intro). They played it a lot on WJOB on the Jan Gabriel show at night. I never knew that it was a cover song, but now that you've said it - it really does sound like Zombies music.
The fact that you guys bring it up and Tom even went to I-tunes to try to find it is a strange coincidence. I wonder if those Polish Ladies clamoring for soup bones at the local store in Shep's movies were the ones who put "Who stole the Kishka" into the top 40? |

If you want to get into the Zombies a bit more, I would like to recommend either Zombie Heaven, one of the best CD box sets, with entire discs of BBC sessions & unreleased material or if you don't have the D-E-A-U-X, as Shep would put it, there's a single CD compilation called the Zombies Singles 1964-69. Either way, they both have their big hits, as well as songs such as the original version of "I Love You" which are equally excellent. |
