How could I forget Mrs. Johnson's on Easter Sunday. It was a must, but the wait could last for hours so my mom would pack snacks to hold us over Then on the way home we always had to drive by Wells Street beach to look at the water. |

Yes Tom, I certainly do remember occasionaly going to Mrs.Johnson's for Sunday dinner when I was quite young. If my memory serves correctly, we waited outside in the car until our name or a number was called. The food was delicious home stlye cooking, and those kind of restaurants are practically extinct in our world today. I hadn't thought of this place in many years, and recently when it came to mind, I didn't remember at all where it was located. Then one day, when I ran across this web site, here it is, picture and all! Thanks for the memories!! I grew up in Hammond in the 40's & 50's, and will be adding more comments in the forum on Hammond. |

I guess you are about 9 years older than I, since you said that your sister was graduated from Tech in 1945 and that she was 13 years older than you. Were you born in 1940? I came along in June of 1949.
Our ages are close enough that we would have to have a lot of the same memories of places and things in Hammond.
Like you, I also have a sister who is 13 years older, and she is my only sibling. She was graduated from HHS in 1954, and I am a 1967 graduate of that fine institution.
That is SO COOL that you also remember Mrs. Johnson's Chicken Dinner!
There were some cottages behind the restaurant that they rented to travelers in the days prior to the times that I can remember. I'm not sure when they stopped renting them, but it seems to me that they were no longer being used during the days of my visits to the restaurant, which would have been in the 50s and 60s.
There was also a Sinclair gas station right next to the restaurant (to the left, as one faced the front of the restaurant...the photographer must have been standing in front of it). I think the gas station, cottages, and restaurant were under the same ownership.
As can be seen in the picture, there were benches outside where people could sit while waiting for a table.
I VIVIDLY remember becoming so hungry that I thought I would die while we waited for a table, then waited for our food. We would go immediately after church, and I would be really hungry by the time the service was over. By the time we drove to the restaurant from Hammond, waited for a table, and then waited for our food, I was ready to pass out!
Oh, well, I survived, and the food was really worth the wait.

You touched on another subject of interest.... DINO the Dinosaur! Were there Dino objects you could acquire? There was a Sinclair Station on the corner of 171st and Kennedy on the way to Morton. This would be across the street from Huber funeral home and run by a fellow named Homer.
It was also across the street from my Uncle Bill's Blacksmith shop. By the way,that is Uncle Bill Lohse, my Grandmother's brother. He had a hearth and that was just like out of the 1800's. That is the extent of my memory.

I've had 2 "Dino" inflatable dinosaurs hanging in my garage for the past 10 years...they are still there today! They say Sinclair on their sides and I got them from my father-in-law, who had them hanging in the windows of a small trailer he used to pull behind his truck. I also have a tin sign that says "Standard Oil of Indiana" on it.
In the Calumet Region, Sinclair seems to be all but gone from the scene, but they still have gas stations in lots of other places in the country. There used to be the big Sinclair refinery located in EC/Whiting along Indianapolis Blvd, and just north of EC Roosevelt High School. My Uncle worked there as a pipefitter for many years. Sometime around the early 1970's ARCO (Atlantic Richfield) bought out the refinery and all the local Sinclair stations. They put up signs showing a man on a ladder climbing up the pole with an ARCO sign, getting ready to change the Sinclair sign. Later they followed with him climbing down with the Sinclair sign. I thought that the entire Sinclair company got sold to ARCO, but later happily discovered that it was only in the Region that this happened and Sinclair was still alive and well.
Not too long after that, the Refinery itself shut down and was a serious TOXIC waste site. Everything there has been leveled, but I believe that the site itself is still off limits to humans because of the contamination.
Across the road from Sinclair, there used to be a HUGE NIPSCO gas tank (one of those that rises and falls based on the amount of gas stored in it). That got torn down around the same time. And then of course in the last 10 years or so, even our great Standard Oil Division of the AMERICAN Oil Company (AMOCO) got sold to British Petroleum! How sad is that? What was more American than Standard Oil, and now it is owned by the Brits. And Inland Steel is owned by East Indians.
America had better wake up, because soon we will neither build nor own anything, even in our own country. |

But, maybe you and I along with the others of this site really appreciate the near past. My Grandfather would only fill his car[ Plymouth] with Standard Oil gas from the station on Columbia.He worked for Inland Steel for 50 years.
[:(!]My political comment is that the BILL HAS COME DUE to allow those unqualified but deemed equal in terms of diversity into society. There is but one standard English for example. Ask Miss Hunter, 12th Grade English teacher at MHS.
The standards for qualifications of teachers, my field, has evaporated. Where is the moral oath which I had to swear to uphold?

Hey, I just found out that "Mrs. Johnson's Chicken Dinner" is now "Roadhouse Bar and Grill." The building is still there!
It's at the corner of U.S. 6 and Meridian. I was thinking it was at the junction of U.S. 6 and Rt 49 but it is about a mile west of there.

I was just looking at the Johnson's Chicken place on FB. The "Roadhouse" which is there now is a bright red place and is a biker joint. They were having problems there, but it may have been "cleaned up". I don't know, I've never been in the joint. The gas station is gone and the lot is empty. Behind the building, just about right in line with the car on the right, is a little bitty bait shop. To the left where the trees are is now Sunset Hill park.
We are expecting a new grandson any day now and probably will be heading up that way sooner or later. I will post a photo then...Cj |

Hi to all!
The Chicken Diner belonged to my great aunt Lillie Johnson...yes, there really was a Mrs. Johnson. My mother worked for Aunt Lillie in the early 40's. Lillie's husband was John L. Johnson who ran the Johnson Brothers Oil Company in the area. I was there several times in my younger days :) The cottages, according to my mother, at one time were rented out to my gt gt grandmother, Mary Johnson and one of my mother's brothers. |

Hey SC, we went up there 2 weeks ago. The Google Earth pic that BobK linked to is what the "Roadhouse"(formerly Johnson's Chicken) looks like now, so I didn't bother to drive out that way.
It was typical NWI crap weather for that time of year: windy, no sun, cold, snowy, 'now I remember why I moved to Ky.'
We didn't need snow tires, but there was snow cover everywhere from the hammering they received the week before.
"Let's go home!"
The only problem was, when we got home, the weather here was no quantum leap for the better. As I remember, we had 9 or 10 days in the 80's by this time last year. But I see the weather is heading up now. Soon the relatives will be coming down here. My brother and his wife like to go 'junking' on the 400 Mile Yard sale in June so we will be doing that. Then the kids come down for general "Fun 'n Sun"...Cj |

My electric bills show the average temperature for the billing period and the average kwh/day. They also show that same info for the corresponding billing period one year back. The average temperature this year was 39°F and was 55°F last year!

The "Roadhouse"(formerly Johnson's Chicken) is closed and the place is for sale. I noticed yesterday that there are 3 of the cabins across US 6 on the NW corner. They must have been moved there and used for storage. I think the bait shop was originally one of the cabins.

I thought I was the only one who remembered this place. I also thought I was going to starve waiting to eat. My father would take the family out there every sunday for lunch. We decided to visit Nashville to see what makes it tick, but we stopped in for dinner at a place called Loveless Café for chicken dinner. It reminded me very much of the Mrs. Johnson's Chicken Dinner pix, right down to the neon sign, that I have seen posted. It reminded me so much of it that I half expected to see mention of Johnson when reading of the history of Loveless---but no.

Yes, Loveless is a popular spot, though it has (for we who remember the original Loveless) changed with new ownership. The place has a lot of good art now, though. And is interesting to visit. When I say, original, I mean--the food. The sign is really a prized piece of history. There are usually a group of bikers there, as Hwy. 100 is a route that is beautiful to drive West out into the country side.
For me the food is not as authentic as it was--it has been citified, Sysco-supplied. And you can get the same taste at Shoney's or Cracker Barrel, and even Denney's. My appreciation for "real down home" biscuits and gravy are based on my 6 years in Southeastern Kentucky when eating out was unheard of and I had three aunts all within walking distance who were superb cooks. Of course, we also had frying chickens at the ready (after the neck-ringing, scalding, feather picking, and singeing) which are unheard of today--the chickens supplied by whomever are fattened beyond the fryer stage.
Real down home biscuits are not so big and yeasty, and have a certain flavor that baking soda gives them and real down home gravy is less thick, has more flavor from a thickening rue that has been just a bit scorched before adding the milk.
I have found a place to eat breakfast that is less Sysco-supplied for my biscuits and gravy. It is the Beacon Light out near Lyles, TN--on Hwy. 100 beyond Fairview. I haven't eaten their chicken, though. And I only go there a couple times a year.
Did you make it to the Pancake Pantry on Hillsboro Rd? (also known as 21st Ave) Best, lightest pancakes and the syrup is made there, not sold to anyone for distribution. The best time to go there is before or at 7:00AM any day or around 10:00AM on a workday. They have a good french toast also.....If you go later than 7AM, the line is wrapped around the block. But, Hillsboro Village is a quaint and sweet little setting. Of course, the city officials are chomping at the bit to change that ambience. Go Figure.
Oh, and you guys are here with the mom's and dad's and newly enrolling college students. That may make the Pantry line and every day, all-day-long wrap-around line experience.

The biscuits were awesome!! Normally I'm not a 'biscuit & jelly' guy, but I scarfed up on these in a hurry.
I was a little disappointed with the chicken. Maybe it was just an off night for me, but the chicken seemed a bit overdone and dry. I always order dark meat which is usually not as prone to overcooking as the breast.
We didn't go to the pancake place, although we were on Hillsboro road and saw some very serious real estate there along the way.
Went into the Opryland Hotel, last night. Very cool and very reminiscent of places in Vegas, like the Bellagio.
This morning, we will be going to some gigantic flea market thing at the Fairgrounds and then head back to Ky Lake...Cj |

Well, (DUH) we parked pretty close to the ticket booth (for parking). So, yeah, it was a bit of a hike and we bought alot of stuff we could do without, but it is a HUGE place and I'm sure we will return when it cools down a bit.
Opryland Hotel has alot to see, but it is pricy. Ya know, food and such. $30 for a pizza, $20 for parking.

The icebox is now the proud possession of my niece. The oak is in excellent condition--the inside is what it is--metal (some of it was painted white. Good storage piece and nostalgic decorator piece (not that I do any decorating.)
It is interesting to me that antique furniture--solid wood--seems to be dropping in value, as wood becomes more scarce...
If/when you return to our fair city, let me know ahead of time--maybe I can meet you guys at the flea market and take you to an antique mall--if you have the energy to do both (I often am "tarred" by the time I've gone through one mall.
Or, if your game for an early pancake breakfast treat, I could meet you at the Pantry in Hillsboro Village---The nephew I used to meet there has moved out of state, so I don't make myself get over there very often now.
Cooler weather. Yes.
Oh, BTW, they charge for parking now? It has been longer than I thought--but there is another entrance (or used to be) that lets you park up closer to the top , near the buildings, and that is where I have parked most often.

We are thinking of making another trip. I want to contact my brother and his wife about it. They are heavy into the 'junkin' and would love that place. They have come down for two years now to do the 400 Mile thing. We drove hundreds of miles and didn't see anywhere near the amount of and diversity of things we saw at the fairgrounds, but alas and alack, they still work and don't have the flexibility that we do.
I will let you know, for sure! My wife is into the antique side of it all.
...and, yeah, it's $5 to park. No admission fee.

Did you see Mike Woolf (Wolf?) of American Pickers fame? In June, in a hospital waiting room I saw an article in Nashville magazine a picture of his home out there. I doubt it is on the main drag--Wynonna and her momma live out there too.
Did you go Fly, Tennessee ? Had to throw that in; I love that name--the place
isn't much more than a spot in the road (A smaller spot than Leiper's Fork.)--probably should be named Flea, Tennessee.
I look forward to having an antique/junk run with you guys, if we can connect next time you come up.

We didn't meet Mike personally, but we did meet his friend, Alex Cirimelli, who owns the Serenite Maison across from Puckett's. If you saw the Pickers episode where they were contracted to decorate William Shatner's place, Alex was on the show and was to one who procurred all the items.
She told us to contact her if we come back to setup for a room for the night in case we decided to stay for their nightly entertainment sessions at Puckett's. I guess they recently had Willie Nelson there doing some kind of benefit from a flatbed truck. It's all free, too. Just pull up some kind of seat and enjoy.
It's kind of hard to believe they could fit a flatbed in that little bitty town, isn't it?..Cj

SEEJAY, I am still not sure about those dates--but if at all possible I will try to meet you guys when things get nailed down.
TOM: I have tried to update my profile with my new email address, but it doesn't work for some reason--can you hep me. : )
I just got word from Ken O'Neal Ñ in two weeks he is going to have open heart surgery for 4 bypasses. I am stunned by that news and can imagine he must be beyond stunned. His Dr. had told him recently that he was a healthy 70 year old. Shows to go ya, what Drs. can and can't predict, I guess. Just thought you would want to know.

I'll do that. OOPS, that won't work, my old email shows in the box when I
go to your profile to email you. That email address is doesn't exist. Without someone tweeking the profile whatchamacallits, I can't update my address. OR,
I am not understanding what I have to do besides input a new address--I'll look at the thing again tomorrow, to see if there is other info I have to input to get it to work. Today, I gotta go take care of some dawgs....
