It was located in a group of small store fronts on the west side of Kennedy Ave. somewhere between Sharon Maes and the florist (was it Gladish?) to the south. We used to buy candy, etc., there. Actually the experience wasn't all that pleasant as Granny was a rather imposing figure. We'd walk in the front door (with its little bell that would ding-a-ling). A few seconds later she'd waddle down the stairs (she apparently had her living quarters on the second floor), looking a bit perturbed. I figured that she didn't consider the interruption of whatever she was doing upstairs worth it just to sell some cheap candy to a couple of whippersnappers.
A couple of years ago my brother and I checked the area out; we couldn't recall for certain which of those little stores used to be Granny's. There were so many small shops like that on Kennedy Ave. back then - and there still are. This is one reason why I found the area fascinating (we'd moved to Hessville from Woodmar in early 1962). :)

If you can remember which one was the State Farm agent(I don't)Granny's was right next door to it, to the south. We used to hide back in there during lunch hour to smoke cigarettes..........CJ |

Many thanks, Chris! I'm amazed and delighted that someone besides my brother ad I recall Granny's.
I also remember the State Farm office. Are you sure that Granny's was immediately south of it? Not to doubt your word; I'm just trying to pinpoint the location for certain. :-)

I'm not sure enough to bet the farm on it. If I could stand in front of those buildings right now, I probably would see it. In fact, I go there from time to time because I still have family there. I will make it a point look it over again.........CJ |

CJ -- When you get over there to take a look.... The list I have from the old Top Hat ads shows that the State Farm office was at 7014 Kennedy and Hessville Hobbies was at 7020. That might help you and Mike locate where Granny's was. I don't remember it. Could it have opened after I graduated?

Thanks k,
Knowing which one was St Farm will help. I'm sure she was only there a few years in the 60's. Students used to make it a point to go there in groups because she couldn't keep an eye on everybody ripping off an extra bag of chips or whatever........CJ |

Chris,
LOL That's hilarious! No wonder Granny was so "militant". My brother told me of one time when he and a couple of his buddies went there and one of the guys picked up a jar of baby food or something; suddenly Granny launched herself from behind the conter and began jabbing the boy with a yardstick or some such weapon, ordering him to "put that down!" I suppose that we unknowingly caused her a lot of grief during those years (of course my brother and our friends excelled at those shenanigans back then!). :-

Ken,
Uh-oh -- now you've gone and done it. Hessville Hobbies. Gosh, that name sounds so familiar! But I can't at the moment recall the place. I wonder what they specialized in? Models? I ask because I remember buying models from Sharon Maes and I'm trying to recall if I ever did business with Hessville Hobbies (c'mon, brain!). :-)
