Ah, yes, how could anyone who lived through that ever forget it? I particularly remember the 5 foot deep snow drift the wind so kindly deposited over my driveway. Took me all day to dig that out.

I remember that everything shut down. Nothing moved for a couple of days. I think I saw my first snowmobile ever going down the street that day. They were pretty uncommon in East Chicago in those days. Even the air was cleaner because the mills had shut some of their operations down. Shep always talked about the blast furnaces....and they would really make the sky red at night. But what I remember being the dirtiest and smelliest was the coke batteries. My brother actually worked at the coke batteries as a summer college student (back when the mills actually hired summer students) and he used to come home looking like a coal miner.
My brother and sister built an huge snowfort after that snowfall. Still have the picture of it today. |

Can anyone give us a link to some pictures of "The Region" after that blizzard hit? I would love to see some.

My father was working a part-time job as a security guard at a local hospital when the blizzard began. Because it took so long to plow the side streets, his relief co-workers were stuck at home while he was stuck at work. Lucky the hospital had some empty beds where he could sleep for the next two nights.
In my back yard was a huge snow drift that allowed me to walk up to the roof of the house.
Also, my friends and I built a series of interconnected igloos on our our front lawns. But rather than cut out individual blocks of snow like the eskimos do, we just dug out the interior of the piled up snow on our lawns.
One important thing I learned from this experience is to stock up on food. Since severe weather can be unpredictable, I now stockpile throughout the year. |

Although I don't smoke and don't drink alcohol, I do consume pizzas.

I was away in Bloomington at college then, but my folks captured the moment. I expect Swartz was posed for the moment; I don't recall that he was that adventurous.
