Can anyone confirm whether the man who tells Ralphie that the line starts "back there" is none other than Jean Shepherd himself? It sounds just like him, but i cannot find a decent photo of Jean from that period to be certain. There is no mention in the credits that i can see either. Any comments?

Regards

I've heard this elsewhere...I'll dig out my movie and check it out.
It would not surprise me, as Shep did make appearances in at least one other movie - Ollie Hopnoodle.

I'll view the movie and then get back to you.

OK. Just checked the movie and put that scene on zoom. Yes, it is Shep. He also appears right at the beginning of the movie. When they pan out from Ralphie's house, there are two adult men strolling past on the snow covered sidewalk. The one nearest the street is Shep. If you listen closely, you can hear his voice as he says something to the other guy. Also, I put the movie on commentary (Bob Clark and Peter Billingsly discuss the making of the movie while it is playing) and right as the two adults walk past, Bob Clark is talking about Shep and then he says "there he is" so it is clear that it is Shep in the movie.

So there you have your proof...just like Hitchcock, Shep also did cameos in his movies.

Just checked the internet movie data base, and they list Shep as also playing the role of Santa!.....could be.
