Hard to say.
Originally done for PBS just like 4th of July, Josephine and Phantom.
Disney channel then played it, and ultimately issued it as VHS.
I don't know the details, but they probably struck some deal because the movie uses the "Whistle while you work" song from Snow White, so they may have used that to strike a deal.
I've written to Disney, who said they have no schedule for a DVD release.
There are folks that talk on this forum who supply DVDs of the movie, although the DVD I ended up with was pretty fuzzy (taken from TV). The VHS version is pretty good - I picked one of those up about 6 months ago for $15.
I'm not sure if Schmidco sells the DVD (he doesn't generally sell things that have had an official release), but he could probably tell you who you could contact to get one.

I've just completed my collection of Shep movies on DVD, by purchasing "Ollie Hopnoodle" at http://www.songofthesouth4me.net/dvds-movies.html . The price was reasonable, the shipping fast, the quality good. I'm not sure about the legality; it's transferred from the Disney VHS, but did Disney ever give permission?

Like most of the movies, it's a bit uneven. The alarm clock segment is a classic. I found the dog subplot a little out of place (not even hinted at in any of Shep's story collections; and not that amusing). I was surprised to find that the family doesn't actually start out on their vacation till close to the end. The bee episode is handled better in the story than in the movie.

I have to wonder about Zudoc's story about the Hungarian bartender, the Jesuit priest, the turtle on a leash, and the glass of milk. The story was apparently so bad that the management would not permit it to be told on the premises of the Bluebird!

By the way, was there a real Bluebird Tavern in the neighborhood? Perhaps where Darnell's was, later? Or Chuck and Irene's?

Bill,
Blue Bird Tavern was on the east side of Kennedy Avenue just north of 169th Street -- 6857 Kennedy Avenue -- between the Nickle Plate tracks and 169th Street. The Sinclair Service Station was on the corner of 169th and Kennedy and Blue Bird was just north of that.

Aha! Thanks, Ken. I recall now hearing that before; but it slipped my mind. I've never been big on taverns. Stories, now, that's something different!

something i had thought of recently.
since disney co-created this with pbs. maybe we can request the title to be converted to DVD. a link to request:

http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/moviefinder/request/requestvideo.html

I'm sure with enough nostalgic people we could get them to push it out on dvd. :)
