I contacted WGBH in 2006 and the problem seems to be exorbitant rights clearance costs:

"Thank you for your interest in WGBH. We always appreciate hearing from our viewers, listeners, and Web site visitors.

Unfortunately, JEAN SHEPARD'S films are not in distribution at this time; the rights clearance costs are prohibitive. Indeed, we have been looking to clear these rights for two years but the costs are out of reach for the time being. We regret to say that we do not have information as to when or if rights will be cleared. In the meantime, as we are releasing titles all the time, you might check back with from time to time." - from 01/17/2006

Still no DVD release, doubtful we'll ever see any of the WGBH/PBS movies on DVD. Whoever owns the rights is foolish in not making a deal. These aren't going to be big sellers, so it's better to get some $$$ for a movie with a small market, than getting nothing by holding back

My three local PBS stations in NYC (WNET, WLIW, WNJN) haven't shown any of Shep's filMS in at least 25 years. I've contacted them about broadcasting the films but it's a waste of time. All you get is a polite reply that the films are "not on their schedule".

I'm surprised at your surprise, Bill! Yes this has been out for a couple of years now. When it first came out, it was in all the big discount stores...Shopko, Target, etc. and for about $15.

My wife also found a video tape copy of "Ollie Hopnoodle's haven of Bliss" on the web for me a while back for a cheap price. Disney legitimately put this out several years ago on video tape. Our local video rental shop had a copy and I rented it a couple of times until it disappeared....they said someone broke the tape. I'm not sure why it hasn't come out on DVD'd think if Disney could get the rights for Videotape, they should have the rights for DVD.

Now if PBS would only get their act together and put Josephine, Phantom and 4th of July out legally, we could all quit watching our inferior (from the TV) copies!
